Dave #8 in Spin's Top 50 Frontmen of All Time

Check out this month's Spin for the Top 50 Frontman of All Time article, Diamond Dave made it to 8. The best line they had about him was, "Often copied, never duplicated." Prince was # 1. I think it should have been Dave, but I can't knock Prince. Of course Sammy was no where on the list.

Can we get the full list posted ?

Dave should be in the top 5 of any realistic list.

Prince shouldn't be considered a "front man"...He's not really considered to be in a "band."

He's a solo artist. Hence, really the only attraction at his shows...

A front man should only be identified in a band of equal parts. For instance, at a VH show with Dave, some people are there to see Ed, some to see Dave...Hell, some drummers were there just to see Al...

Dave is by far the best front man to ever live...but, he can't even really be considered a frontman now...I mean how many people go to a Dave show to see Brian Young or James Lomenzo?

Dave is a solo artist. That puts him as being the only attraction at a Dave show...He will never truly be recognized as being the quentessential "front man" again until he's in a BAND.

      Know what I mean?

You could also define "front man" in terms of an outgoing, energetic charisma that one brings to a music show - and that charisma driven simply by themselves and not through playing any instrument.

That way, you could include solo artists like Ozzy (solo) or Prince, while separating those performers from more meloncholy (but great in their own way) performers like Elton John and Billy Joel.

        My short list would be:
        DLR
        Prince,
        James Brown
        Bruce Springstein
        Mick Jagger
        Madonna
        Bono
        Bon Scott/Brian Johnson

Okay...I could find the top 10...

              The Top 10:
              1. Prince 2. Mick Jagger 3. Robert Plant 4. James Brown 5. Jimi Hendrix 6. Elvis Presley 7. Axl Rose 8. David Lee Roth 9. David Bowie 10. Bono.

and here's an example of how they rank...

              here's Axl...at NUMBER FUCKING 7!!!!

              07 Axl Rose
Why him? The star of Guns N' Roses led the greatest hard-rock band of all time, but could take it down a notch for the perfect whistle solo. And nobody else could get away with that bandanna-and-backward-baseball-cap look.
Signature move: The sway walk - eyes closed, both hands on the mic, body rocking as if waves were lapping at his sides.
Bonus: Turned an ailing with a model into a haunting video that made us cry (despite instructions to the contrary).
              Sex appeal: 9
              Presence: 9
              Fashion sense: 6
              Musical ability: 8
              Total: 32

              I'll find more...

So look at the top ten...

in my estimation...there are a few that shouldn't be there from the start...based on the solo piece...

and tell me this...HOW IN THE FUCK DOES PRINCE RATE AHEAD OF FUCKING ELVIS PRESLEY?

anyways...you have to take out...Prince, Brown, Hendrix, Elvis and Bowie...based on the fact that they've always been known as solo performers...and not FRONT MEN...

                That leaves...

                1. Mick, 2. Plant, 3. Rose, 4. Roth, 5. Bono

Rose is ranked to high...although certainly he should be ranked high...

and you can't really argue with Jagger and Plant...

                and bono...like U2 or hate U2...has some presence...no doubt...

Here's some more info...I'm getting the impression only the top ten is being released until the magazine comes out...

                  here's more...

PRINCE has topped a new poll to find the greatest rock frontmen of all time, beating off MICK JAGGER and ROBERT PLANT.
The PURPLE RAIN singer was the number one pick by editors at America's SPIN magazine.
Spin chiefs claim their choice was an easy one, "He sings like an oversexed elf, and dances the whole world into the dirt."
The top 50 was male-heavy, but COURTNEY LOVE, KAREN O, JOAN JETT, BLONDIE's DEBORAH HARRY, PATTI SMITH and GWEN STEFANI also made the list.

Funny...Patti Smith is in there...but not Sammy Hagar...maybe they should have gotten her instead of Shamta...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

                        Yeah that's in order...

                        here's a couple of things...

Okay...it's bad enough that Courtney Love is ahead of her dead husband Kurt Cobain...

                        but...

                        AHEAD OF JIM FUCKING MORRISON?

                        NO FUCKING WAY...

                        Morrison should be top five...

A few of people who are singers but not front men in there. James Brown, he's great but not a front man. He's a singer. Also a few jokes in there too. Axle Rose...if he was so great a front man, then why did the rest of the band leave pretty much just him in it??
