    Van Halen I Revisited

it may seemed rushed since rikk just made another excellent review, this time on 1984........but there are so many ideas in my head, i dont want to forget them all

Van Halen I........the album that started it all.....the one that kicked off the legacy of the greatest badn of all time, and for 6 amazing albums we were groveling at their feet for more........over time this isnt exactly my favorite VH album, but it is legendary.....no matter where it is on my list it still carries a punch whenever i listen to it, this album alone gives us classic vh fans(aka non-sheep) a lot of pride.........it is recognized as a rock n roll landmark, one of the best albums ever, and of course it sold 10 million copies.....when you get hundreds of critics saying that For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is a rock landmark and a must listen for any van halen fan, than maybe.....just maybe van hagar could earn a little respect......but there is no man in his right mind who would say that.......i would rather listen to cold as ice by foreigner over and over again, than listen to FUCK........but back to the matter at hand.......here we go

track 1- RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL
when people picked this up at the local record shop and popped it on the turntable, this was the first song they heard......their first glimpse into the greatness of DLR and company.......this song alone has acheived a legendary status among all music fans........the first lyric of the song "I live my life like there's no tomorrow" in my oppinion is one of the greatest lyrics in history......when compared to other vh songs, this song seems strangly different though.......eddie doesnt realyl have a solo in it, which is par for the coruse on almost any other VH song.......and to me the main instrumental component in this song strangely enough is one Michael Anthony........and, well.....wit hthe exception of push comes to shove, i dont think he has ever realyl carried another song like he has here........just that one string of open e notes will forever live in rock history......and mike also is on top of his game during the chorus with his harmonies(as he usually is)

    track 2- ERUPTION
many people will tell you this is the greatest guitar solo in history.......its not my favorite solo in history or with van halen........but if you look at skillful solos, eruption would be right up there on any list.....im more of a guy who likes to listen to van halen songs and think about how on everybody in the band is.....so ive never been a huge fan of ed's little instrumentals, like eruption and spanish fly......but i should also mention that ed's fingertapping line about a quarter of the way through the song, is definately the most famous fingertapping line in history.......you all probably know which one im talking about even though the whole song is basically fignertapping......thats how famous it is

track 3- YOU REALLY GOT ME
the first of many cover songs to appear on a VH album........this is a song where i think alex really shines.........over the years alex has made so many van halen songs better than they should be through his extremely heavy drumming.....i love listening to a vh song and than listening to alex come in beating the crash symbol for all its worth.......obviously eddie van halen shines in every song, and we all know that.....so i dont like to make light of the fact in every song i review, so you might have noticed that by now........dave is incredible in this song..........he does his high pitched DLR squeel and i know who the true master of humanity is every time he does it........i love mikes bass in this song, its another one of those liens that thumps and carries everything.....especially during the solo.........every time eddie does a guitar solo, i like to listen to what mike anthony is playing, because it seems like the only time you can really hear what he is playing......and its never super complicated......but it sounds really good, it always goes perfectly with the song

track 4- AINT TALKIN BOUT LOVE
one of eddies more recognizable riffs........but in the case of this song........its daves song.......his lyrics own, his voice is perfect......and you can already imagine him working the crowd during the "I've been to the edge" part........i like how ed holds back in this song and only goes on a but of a mini solo........and let me say, it is probably his best sounding non-complicated solo in the catalouge........the band as a whole is great here.......you cna tell they were still very happy together in their youth.........and it makes me happy to think of the old days when the guys were all friends

    track 5- I'M THE ONE
my favorite song on the cd.........this song IS classic Van Halen....my definition of a good classic van halen song is a song that contains all the elements i like most about the band, that they used on a lot of songs, but not on all of them.......a real catchy guitar riff is oen of those elements, and obviously i'm the one has that riff.......i also like alex playing his trademark bass drum techniques( he had 4 bass drums, so whenever he pounds on any of them at the same time it sounds crazy) but the thing i love most about a classic vh song is the chorus........if the chorus cathes my attention and it has mike and dave and ed harmonizing their asses off, with mike hitting his signature high note......its a winner in my book......this song is just straight up rock n roll.....lets not forget daves genious in putting the barbershop harmony around the end of this mother fucker........bah bah da shubby du wah bu da........dave was and is really out there.....and doing stuff like this is why he will forever be the showstopper.......i really like the end of the song too where they are all going crazy while singing "showwwwwww your love!"......christ man, nothing beats van halen

    track 6- JAMIES CRYIN
for a while this was my favorite van halen song........this was another song where mike had a driving bass line......eds riff in the beginning is awesome.....it couldnt go more perfectly with mikes thumping bass line......and alex is playing a standard beat......but it sounds real nice in the mix........when dave comes in with "she saw the look in his eyyyyes!" and does his squeel when saying eyes, i need a new pair of pants.........god damn, could it get anymore perfect at that moment..........and the chorus is amazing.......this is without a doubt mikes best harmonizing in the history of VH........i couldnt imagine him not in this band......jamies cryin wouldnt be the same

    track 7- ATOMIC PUNK
a van halen gem........back with dave.......they were true rockers, and this song proves it......back when ed was still a badass, he played great guitar on songs like this......songs that mean something deep and are origional......songs that arent about knowing, or feeling when its love....songs that arent about asking why this cant be love......in other words songs that dont blow huge dick.........atomic punk is about the creation of a harsh society......van halen was a safe haven for a lot of outcasts when they wrote songsl ike this......people really looked up to them......they lost that somewhere along the way.....it suddenly became about greed and blame.....i cant think of when that was though......oh wait, it was in 1985, and they released an album entitled 5150........this song rules......another great DLR vocal perfomrance

    track 8- LITTLE DREAMER
this song is way too underrated, this is my 2nd favorite on the album......the main guitar line that opens the song screams drama......when that guitar htis you can tell daves got some shit on his mind and he is gonna tell you exactly what the fuck it is......the band is really together on this one......alex plays some good drums, especially during the solo section.......i will be the first to admit that i have probably spoken a little too much on mikey during this review......so it is probably concluded that im a big mike anthony fan, which i am.....but in this song he really needs no credit.....he doesnt do much.....but his bass does contribute to the natural flow of the song......daves lyrics in this song are untouchable......when sammy accused dave of not having a good singing voice, i thought of this song right away......he sings his heart out.......another of my favorite VH moments is on this song.......the second time when DLR sings "Aint no one talkin bout those, crazy days gone by" and instead of the way he sang it the first time.....he raises the octave.......it just sounds so fucking good........let me not forget that this is my favorite EVH solo.......it isnt one of those out there fingertapping experimental offbeat solos we get so used to......this is classic rock......but at the same time its got some new rock flavor to it........he hits all the roght high notes on his guitar in this one

    track 9- ICE CREAM MAN
DLR has many musical tastes.....we all know it......this is one of them......i always loved the fact that DLR plays the accustic in the beginning......i think DLR could have been an excellent guitar player......his love of really old blues classics, i think always had a positive effect on the vh catalouge..........when this song kicks in though........its like nothing ive ever heard........a hard rock band playing blues has been done before, but when van halen does it, when they play those shuffle lines that the stones and the beatles always played.......vh brings a new flavor too it.....the put a unique spin on the sound......the chorus sounds great......and eddies solo is amazing.......the way he starts the solo is on fingertapping line that blows my mind.........

    track 10- ON FIRE
when i was younger this song wasnt big on my lists......but as i got older, i really grew to love any van halen song that was super heavy.....this is one of those songs......after the first chorus eddie plays this lick........and i have to brace myself, cause i know the band is about to come in and tear the roof off of my damn house......this song is a classic.......it is definately the best song to choose to end the album......its also the heaviest, hardest rocker on the album.......to me when i hear it......i imagine dlr and mike in the studio just laughing having a great time.....it really osunds like they are having fun when they are singing "fireeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!" in the realyl high voices........van halen was all about fun back in the day.....and it always brings a smile to my face when i listen to an album like this

thats it, i hope you enjoy the review as much as i enjoyed writing it.....it took me down memory lane thinking about my first time listening to the album........i love van halen and everything they used to be about.......if dave rejoined the group, i would forgive the boys in a second........jus ta chance of them bringing back the magic that is vh is good enough for me.......sure eddie and alex will still probably be assholes.......but its van halen......a name that brigns us all together, that we all have respect for.....and i have no problem with the legend coming back to life

There's a lot of firepower on that record that they never actually ever did top. Then again, why would they want to? That whole first record is sheer genius.

Just because he has four bass drums doesn't mean he plays all four at once. It's for show. All the double bass drum work on all VH albums are done with two feet and two bass drums (or a double pedal). The beginning of "Hot for Teacher" is done on a simmons electronic drum (with drumsticks), he then intruduces the kick drum, then a rack tom, and finally breaks into the double bass shuffle that carries the song. The four kick drums are for show, similar to the wall of guitar amps onstage. Only a few are mic'd, the rest are props.

This is the CD i have bought three times! When i was about 13 my uncle bought me two VH cds, 5150 and VH1, not hard to figure out which one was my favorite. I have an older sister named Jayme, so whenever she would get upset and cry I would blast Jamies crying through the whole house, she hated me for it, and one time she broke my cd she was so mad. Next day bought it again! Now i had this cd spining every day for like 3 months, and one day i got in trouble, and my parents took my favorite thing away, my VH1 Cd! Next day, instead of waiting 2 weeks to get mine back, i went and bought a new one :D Needless to say, this has been and always will be one of my favorite cds! Awesome stuff

I've owned VAN HALEN I on vinyl, cassette, and cd. It DROPPED THE BOMB that sent MILLIONS of kids running back to the woodshed to try and learn what the fuck was going on with EVH's guitar!!!!
DAVID LEE ROTH is a GIANT among men on this recording. GREAT lyrics, HUGE presentation! You KNEW these guys were gonna KICK EVERYBODY'S ASS for years to come. How sad in retrospect that it would all be over way too soon.

                          DAVE OR THE GRAVE BABY!!!!

Best debut album by a rock band IMHO. Also my favorite VH album next to Fair Warning and 1984.
