      Well, here's the thing...

They're acting like it's rehearsal when it's live, and THAT'S your main problem right there. It's just a lazy performance, all ways around...lazy showmanship and lazy musicianship. Which isn't really that surprising, when you get down to it. Ronnie Montrose was a HARD worker and Sam (in his own words) "Just couldn't get along with him on ANYTHING" (wonder why? read on...).

Sam's solo career from the mid '70s to '84 was the epitamy of laziness...one or two singles he might have tried to do something with (to whatever effect) and an album full of easily forgetable filler, even by his standards...throwaway songs for B-grade movie soundtracks ("Over the Top", anyone?), the epitamy of musician laziness...then he joins Van Halen and they manage to get albums out in '86, '88, '91, and '95...each worse than the previous one...manages to put out a "live" album with them in '93, which is almost universally hailed as the LEAST live "In Concert" album ever...spending about as much time worrying about his then-dead solo "career" as he did about Van Halen itself....more time, in fact, if you include the fact that he virtually considered Van Halen his new solo band by his strict refusal to perform anything other than a token number of Roth era material and insists on doing his OWN solo material with the new band (WRETCHED and DISGUSTING move for a new lead singer to come in and start throwing demands down like that, but Ed & Al just didn't care...suited them well enough, they wanted to bury David in the dust anyway...all the luck they had at THAT, haha!!).

Goes back to his solo career and records albums of virtual shit that nobody bought and any SANE record company wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole...keeps promising a supergroup project for years which he can't make materialize....

Reunites with Halen and can't handle any more than 3 throwaway songs with laziness stamped all over them...

Did you expect something OTHER than sheer laziness? Hagar's track record is a 30 year history in the art of laziness....proof positive that, in order to succeed in the music market, you can do things one of two ways:

1 - The Roth Way: Work your BALLS to the floor and battle TOOTH AND NAIL for every bit of success you get; or

2 - The Hagar Way: Meander through your career, not focus on quality, take it easy, smooth and laid-back like, and stumble into a previously-made HUGELY succesful band and ride on someone else's coattails then proceed to complain about it incessently.

Laziness? Sure. What else did you really expect?

I still get the feeling there was some subversion going on there.
Sure, we all know that Ed's tippin' the bottle, and roy is basically a birthday party clown onstage. The band, collectively, still has the ability to do better than that.

It was nothing more than a bastardization. IMO

Damn, bob. Absolutely spot on analysis there. As if it weren't obvious enough Hagar was a fat, lazy sack of shit.

Beginning just a few short years ago, weren't we all FOR ED going back to the bottle and ditching the female so he can tour unimpeded?

Ed's playing is amazingly fresh as much as it is fucked up for the songs he's playing, but man HE CAN PLAY and therefore, do not sell that half-Chink out just yet.

He's not as accurate for the songs like I say, but I bet he pulls a few surprises stil. He ain't dead yet!
