Who's the best player in ANY sport you've ever seen play?

    Alright...a thinking man's game here...

you can only pick ONE PLAYER...

not ONE PLAYER in EVERY SPORT!

So if you go the hockey route...you can only pick one player...

    not one in each sport...

I don't know who my choice is yet...I'll have to think about it...

The most important would have to be Ali (for the whole package, including his political and racial significance)

(He's also the most exciting and charismatic athlete, ever)

And he ranks right up there in the top 3 of "best", if not THE best.

Regardless, he'll always be "THE GREATEST".

      let me rephrase my question...

who's the greatest athlete in ANY sport that you've ever seen perform live...

You had to BE THERE to see them perform...

Oh...uh...I was actually at the World series game where Reggie hit his three homers. I was but seven at the time.

And I was at the Islanders game the first time they won the Cup...

But all in all, I'll go with a horse by the name of Panamaniac. A couple of years back I put good money on that horse just b/c of its name, and it paid off...

        Now that's greatness!

Dominic HASEK. He was a mental case, but Geezus what a great goal tender. Watching that guy cover the puck with his blocker made orthodox goal-tenders cringe, but he could turn any game on it's head and the BUFFALO SABRES were always in it at least. If the they had had just a little more goal scoring around him, they'd of had the cup.

I saw Gretzky with the Kings in 92-93 (somewhere around there...), I saw Mario Lemieux in a playoff game (the first year they won the cup...I think)...

As to the greatest live PERFORMANCE by an athelete...it would have to be Cam Neely, and several times at that...

I was at two hat-trick games (the first hat-trick game was the game against Gretzky and the Kings...the second hat-trick game was when Neely scored goals 49, 50, and 51 after his comeback...against the Caps...with rookie Olaf Kolzig in goal...)

The single greatest performance I was ever there in person to see was Neely scoring in overtime against Brett Hull and the Blues. 90 or 91. I had scalped some front row balcony seats so I was sitting almost directly over the ice (ah, the Garden...I miss it dearly). Neely gets a break out pass at center ice...swoops right under me along the boards...throws a backhand deeke...back to the forehand...wrister, top shelf, red light on...the Garden SHOOK for about a minute after that...
Maybe this is what a heroine addict feels like after getting a long awaited fix, shooting up in the corner of some abandoned building and just not giving a fuck about what the rest of the world thinks...TATTOO"

MJ... Beat the Blazers by himself his last year in Chicago. He outscored the Blazers 26-22 in the 4th quarter.

I know it doesn't count but, Seeing the Dream Team in '92 was a dream come true...

Geez, I've been to a shitload of games, but I don't remember any of them that I'd consider GREAT performances, or even historical...

It doesn't have to be a great performance...although that helps Va...

                        but I'd say...

best player you've seen perform...and if the performance was excellent...than that just adds to it...

                          Oh, that makes it easier....

I'd say it's a tie for me between Clemente and Lemieux...

But I'm going with the Whirling Dirvish himself...

come here tomorrow...I've got a new thread along the same lines...slight twist though...
