Exactly what I had thought. Dallas had too many horses down the stretch I guess.

    Bring on the Heat.

Holy shit! My Mavericks are in the NBA Finals! From NBA laughingstock to Western Conference champions, this franchise has sure come a long way in the past several years. If you'd told me 10 years ago that the Mavericks would someday be in the NBA Finals, I would have laughed at you and told you you were nuts. I was a fan all those years they were winning 11 to 13 games a season, and my loyalty to this team has finally paid off!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...say what you will about Mark Cuban, but he is the best thing that ever happened to the Dallas Mavericks. They started winning from about the time he took over as owner of the team, and have been a perennial playoff team ever since.

Don Nelson also deserves a huge amount of the credit for turning the Mavs around. He inherited a horrible team when he became the coach, and turned them into a playoff club in like three seasons.

Yeah, but Avery Johnson has taken them to that next step. He's the difference IMO.

True, I'm not taking anything away from what Avery has done since he's took over. He took them to the next level, but Nelson got the ball rolling. That said, I don't know that Dallas would have ever made it to the finals had Don Nelson still been coaching them. He was more an offensive minded coach...they were the _allas Mavericks when he was coach...no D, whereas Avery is more of a defensive oriented coach and has taught them how to play good defense, and we all know that good defense wins championships. Dallas tried to outscore their opponents without playing much defense when Nelson was coach.

It's more than just playing good D though. Mental toughness is a huge part of it and that comes from Johnson. And it works on both ends of the court.

                  Should be a good Final.

How Phoenix would have stopped the Diesel, I don't know.

Dirk should drop his shoulder and take his step and a half to the basket on every drive.

Dallas will be challenged to stop the Diesel as well...if Shaq is game ready...and he sure looked it last series...

I like Dallas in the finals...although there are some interesting intangibles there in Miami...

Dallas always seems to do well against Miami, but I don't know how they are going to stop Shaq and Wade, Dwyane Wade especially. Shaq is getting old, but still has his moments, as he's shown in the playoffs. Dallas always had problems with him when Shaq was with the Lakers...but, of course, their answer to Shaq then was to put toothpick Shawn Bradley guarding him. Diop has proven to be a great defender during Dallas's playoff run, and that is who they should put on Shaq. Hell, he shut Tim Duncan down late in game 7 during the Spurs series, and he was having his way with Dallas before that...one reason the Mavs were able to pull that one out.

Dallas won the season series, 2-0. Won the first game 103-90, and the second 112-76. Of course, this is the Finals, and all records and statistics can be thrown out the window.

:D And I stand by that statement, too! Unlike some of you "ankle busters", I don't have a substitute team to bandwagon to when my Pistons/Red Wings/Wolverines/Bears/Tigers lose. I'm not fairweather. Fuck that shit, that's WEAK.

Shaq is nothing like the player he was when he was a Laker, so talking about what he did in past Finals doesn't mean much.

Ah Brett...that's not true and you know it...

NO....those past finals aren't connected to this one...but on those 2 or 3 games...in which he plays like the Shaq of old offensively...you certainly can compare him...

He will never play Defense like he used to...because he's to slow...but he certainly has his moments in which you have to double him...and when you do...it frees up Wade much more readily...

No...he's far from the Shaq in LA-LA land...but jesus christ Brett...quit making him sound like Kwame Brown...

Quit making him out to be the dominant force he once was....he's not.

He was never a great defender BTW.
