See, I don't think the pressure is on Manny - if this fight never happens, Floyd's legacy will be permanently stained and history will remember that it was Merriweather who ducked the Pac-Man with the lame-ass drug testing demands, and not vice versa. I don't buy into the whole "psychological" angle - that only applies when you actually fight.

Call me old-school, but a real champion should be willing to face all top-challengers - that's what people remember about Ali, Leonard, Hagler, Jones Jr. and yes - even Roberto Duran. While Duran may have quit vs. Sugar Ray, he at least displayed enough guts to get in the ring and put it all on the line.

The interesting thing about those 4 is that Duran is probably ranked higher all the ATG lists despite losing to the other 3. His best work was at the lower weights.

Fact is, unless Manny swarms Floyd early and tags him with something big, he does NOT have the boxing skills to keep up with Floyd for 12 rounds, and will get picked apart in a bad way. Manny's got more to lose here IMO.

              Indeed.

Can't say I'm interested in Manny-Cotto II. The tag-line for the fight should be 'What's the Point?'

Manny-JMM IV, on the other hand, I'm liking.

I don't think so because Manny has lost before, Floyd on the other hand is undefeated and that is a REALLY big deal to him.

It would be a great fight.

Realistically, however, SRL is a LOT bigger than FMjr. The fight could only have taken place at 147 - despite his dominance there, Floyd is not a natural welter weight (he was untouchable at 130 or 135). I'd have to say that SRR would win at that weight - I expect it might end up looking a little like the Benitez fight.

P4P, Floyd might be a better fighter. But head to head he can't beat Ray because of the size difference.

That would be the chess match of all chess matches!

                        Floyd UD. At any weight.

The guys Floyd would struggle with (off the top of my head):

Duran at 135 (but not at 147)
Hearns at 147 (too tall, great jab)
Forrest at 147 (ditto Hearns, but with better footwork)
                        Donald Curry at 147

It gets harder to imagine these fantasy match ups the further back in time you go because the game was so different then. At 135lbs today, for instance, is naturally much bigger than a 135lbers in 1950. That being said, I honestly believe that Floyd is arguably GOAT at 130, and had the potential to be at 135. But who wouldn't give a kidney to see match ups with Kid Gavilan, Henry Armstrong, and so on.....?

                            Yup.

It's both a lot of fun and very frustrating at the same time. We start a couple regarding heavyweights from different eras a few pages back if you're interested....

There's that, but both fighters have made short work out of opponents the other has taken longer with (Hatton, for example) or like the case of JMM - Manny struggles with him, and Floyd made him look like a dumbass. Manny's touted as the greatest P4P right now, but (unlike Floyd) he's not... sure, Floyd stands to lose his undefeated record, possibly on a flash knockdown/out - Manny stands a way better chance of getting completely humiliated for 12 rounds IMO...
