Hard to say, they all sound alike... :DWhy settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

I keep my hand in
Check out
Avenged Sevenfold (v old school, bits of Maiden, Dio etc)
Slipknot (reckon everyone's heard them)
Mastodon (non more brutal, Leviathon is a modern classic, best album I heard in years)
Meshuggah
Unearth
System of a Down (unique, although remind me of Bad Brains)
Trivium (old school thrash, overrated but still fucking good)
Bullet for My Valentine (Ditto Trivium)
Not a new band but Corrosion of Conformity releashed an awesome album last year.
Black Label Society (non more metal, Zakk Wylde's finest!)
Coheed and Cambria (Sort of prog rock, not sure if you'd call it metal, but very good nonethless)
Lamb of God, Chimara, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, all pretty similar. They get categorised as "the new wave of american heavy metal". A little hit and miss, IMO, but worth checking out
God Forbid (Ditto above, but with better guitar playing)
If anymore spring to mind, I'll post 'em.

Actually, Trivium kicks major ass!
I got their set at Rock Am Ring from this past weekend off of youtube.com
I am so glad that young bands these days are keeping the old school thrash sound alive....Comment

I love Trivium, but they need to concetrate on 3 things before they become really great
1) vocals, melody is important, even in thrash!
2) Vary the pace of songs, speed doesn't always equal power. All great heavy bands know how slip between fast and slow
3) Rawer production!

Can't be bothered.
Have heard of and music by most of the bands mentioned on this thread so far, but nothing made a connection with me to want to hear more.
I kinda feel bad for kids growing up today with the music that's out there, least as far as what the major labels are putting out.
Am sure I could find a few contemporary bands I liked if I scoured the indie scene enough, but...meh.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
