          Latest news, a Facebook slapfight:

It will be interesting to see how all this shakes out. Tate makes some valid points here that I am assuming could easily be verified by looking at the writing credits on the albums. As for Rockenfield's wife saying it is all a complete lie? I find that pretty amusing, since the only person from the band missing from the meet and greet I went to was her husband.

Why Tates douche move? This show was scheduled right? Did he prevent the rest of the band from going? Or did they tell him to fuck off cause they got Rising West? If the latter then the douche move was theirs for not showing up to a booked gig. And props to Tate for going through with it. I'll reserve final judgement for when truth comes out. But there are 2 ways this might have gone down.

My comment was based on GT performing as QR for the show......

If he performs under GT then that's another story......

They need to just OFFICIALLY call it a day.

The arguments do nothing to help anything. The band does not want to play with Tater anymore. Nobody is forcing them to.

Gigs have been canceled for far less than this bullshit.

Tater thinks by playing the gig he can point fingers and say "I showed up...the other guys did not".

                  So?

                  So fucking what?

Hope he had an instant Queensryche cover band to use to do the gig.

So far, no reviews, no youtube video, nothing from last night.

                  Oh well.

I meant that regarding the fact I looked for evidence GT actually played the gig.

I FINALLY found evidence he did the gig....with his acoustic band.....I had to look pretty hard to find any evidence he did the show......funny, in his press announcement he said "Some members" of QR were not going to be at the show, lol.

Fucking idiot. He should have just spoken the truth. Everyone else in the band refused to work with his lame ass.

And the guy who wrote this review is somewhat delusional.

I spent all day at Usana Amphitheatre Monday following around United Concerts' production coordinator Rob Pierce for a future story about what it takes to put on a concert on in this day and age. (No one should steal this story — it's going to take me some time to write it ...)

I, of course, also spent some time watching opening act Geoff Tate and a few songs of The Scorpions' headlining set before deciding that 14 hours of work was enough. Fourteen hours a day constitute slow days in the Coast Guard, but since I left that career, I am still catching up on all the sleep I missed. I realized I needed to write some informal notes on what I observed at the show, which drew between 6,000 and 8,000 people. By the way, it was a night with weather that you dream about all winter long.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Queensryche, the scheduled opening act, was being scratched, and in its place would be Queensryche's frontman Geoff Tate, with an acoustic band that he used earlier this year on his "Insania" solo tour. The announcement was:

Some of the members of Queensryche could not make the show in West Valley City,
Utah with the Scorpions for personal reasons. Although I would have really
loved for all of us to play together, it wasn't possible for them. I couldn't miss
playing for one of the best rock audiences in the world and opening for one of
my all time favorite bands for anything. KBER has always been so generous
and supportive to me throughout my career and I felt very strongly about playing
such a great show supported by them. Thanks to my fans, the Scorpions and
KBER for your continued support and I plan to rock Salt Lake City today at the show.

                        - Geoff Tate

You would think that the language was code was "We are breaking up" or "Going on a long, indefinite hiatus," but between seeing the band Queensryche without Tate and seeing Tate without the rest of Queensryche, I would choose Tate without question. Really?

While I have always thought Tate oversings far too much, he has arguably one of the best voices in rock music, and definitely in the prog-rock music world.

I didn't have a lot of high expectations for Tate's set, but I found myself engaged in his performance that included two acoustic guitars, a stand-up bass and a synth player. At first, I though the synth player was too corny, but then I got over myself and realized that if you are in for a prog-rock show, you need a synth. Ahhh....I was unware of this. Lotta prog bands better go hire a "synth" player.

Tate was tanned and with his black shades, black vest (without a shirt), goat, and shaven head, was unrecognizable from his MTV days when "Silent Lucidity" was on non-stop rotation. He carried around a goblet of wine rather than a bottle of Jack; when I talked to him a few weeks ago, we talked about his winery and wine-making business far more than music. Why does this not surprise me?.

Despite not moving around too much, the band showed a lot more kinetic energy than I expected from an acoustic band. The lead guitar player, whose name I didn't catch, was superb as he was obviously classically trained, but could still play the blues. He also possessed one of the best backing voices I have heard in a while. Someone — help me out with his name so I can give him some credit.

Highlights of the set included a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," a rendition of Queensryche's "Around the World," and, of course, "Silent Lucidity," which closed the 50-minute performance. Tate, despite being 53, showed no evidence of losing the ability to hit impossibly high notes as well as the low ones, and his vibrato and charisma illustrated his control of the stage and the music. I even fantasized about seeing him audition for an opera some day — his voice was that impressive. Overall, the crowd was energized although the sun was still high in the sky, and Tate warmed up the crowd in what could have been an uncomfortable performance because of rumors about the future of Queensryche. There is no question that Tate's future, in wine-making and singing, is wide open.

Yes, his future as a high class wino is wide open.

One further review of Tater's wholesome winery goodness.

Anybody following the recent drama surrounding Queensryche, which was billed to open the show Monday, couldn't have been completely surprised when the only band member to show up was lead singer Geoff Tate. Apparently dissatisfied with the direction of the band over the past few albums and Tate's plans for further solo endeavors, the remaining four members of Queensryche recently announced the formation of another band, Rising West, where they have recruited another singer and will focus on playing material from Queensryche's classic first five albums. Still, the main band, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, remained booked to do the one-off opener for the Scorpions -- until a Monday morning announcement from Tate that due to personal reasons, "some" members of the band would not be able to make the show.

If by "some" he meant everyone but himself, then the statement was accurate.

Kudos to Tate, however, for showing up with his four-man backing solo band on such apparently short notice, and he performed a dozen songs in a full-hour's acoustic set. The acoustic treatment of Queensryche's material was interesting and mostly engaging -- although, especially in light of the circumstances, it might have been wise to include more of the band's hit material instead of more obscure numbers. But one thing the acoustic treatment did drive home -- Tate has a tremendous voice, and that alone was enough to earn some warm applause, especially during "Eyes of a Stranger," "Jet City Woman" and "Silent Lucidity."

In a moment of Spinal Tap-esque irony, Tate's next-to-last song was a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Prior to the song, Tate, lifting a glass of wine -- undoubtedly his own brand, Insania -- proposed a toast to "all those people who are no longer with us." The dedication was not made to the missing members of Queensryche, but it was hard not to make the mental connection.
