There's a couple kinds of carbonation. For instance in beer, a natural carbonation occurs because of the fermentation process. In soda, it has to be added. Maybe people way back when wanted their soda to have the characteristics of beer?

Wasn't this stuff once considered a health drink? I'm serious, when I was a kid, the pharmacy would sell small bottles of Coca-Cola syrup for people with digestive problems and common coughs. I distinctly recall that "soda" like this initially was bought primarily at drug stores, for it's medicinal value.

I don't know if it's the same with soda, but places add carbonation to water to tell it's fresh and sterile. And I like the taste of carbonated water.

***Maxipad Note*** I'm also not much of a soda drinker anymore. However, an ice cold one in the hot summer does do the job. Unfortunately and as I've gotten older, I just tend to stick with water.
