Speaking of pets...how come when I actually get the chance for a snooze on the couch before work, my cat is always hogging it and I get stuck with the love seat?

Yes, he is also very big , he has plenty of food to steal from the hotels, some years ago, when we were making a barbecue, one of his brothers, jumped onto our balcony, trying to sneak off a piece of meat, he sniffed it

I'm sad to announce the death of my family's pet cockatiel, Fortune

This morning, my mom finally took Fortune to the vet to check out what's been going on with his breathing (he was breathing through his beak on occasion, and birds aren't supposed to do that unless they're sick.) . My first suspicion was a respiratory infection or aspergillosis spores in his throat so that's why I wanted to take Fortune to the vet anyway. It turns out the poor birdy had a very agressive form of cancer and his entire abdomen was covered in cancerous tumors and the reason why he was open-mouth breathing was because it had metastasized to his lungs. We only had two options, put him down, or have him die at home. The vet only gave him a few months to live had we chose the latter.

Fortune passed away at approximatley 9:45AM peacefully in his sleep at the vet's office I'm not sad because the poor birdie has been suffering so much for the past few months and it's such a relief to see him go. Every time this bird would wheeze and breathe with his mouth open it would literally feel like my heart was breaking in two, and the fact that me and my mom went on vacation and had a good time while he was slowly dying of cancer dosen't help at all. I've been such a nervous wreck for the two weeks that he's been like this and it's such a relief to know he's not suffering anymore and that he's in a better place. It's weird, I feel like now that Fortune is dead, he's always with me now....

                    Condolences.

How long did you have Fortune in your family?

Exactly. Dog, cat, fish, bird, reptile, tarantula (I had one as a kid that I loved). Our personal relationship to an animal is special. And it fucking hurts when bad things happen. Especially since pets are so innocent and just want our love and only return unconditional love...that when a terrible thing happens it kills us a little inside.

It's been an interesting mishmash of emotions I've been having all day. In one respect, I'm sad Fortune is gone but in another respect I'm glad he's not suffering anymore.

But honestly, I don't want another pet, at least not right now. I've been thinking of getting a pet snake. but like all pets, snakes eventually get old and die And I've been thinking about a German Shepherd. Again the same thing, dogs get old and eventually die.

I'll probably have a change in heart at some point, but for the time being. I don't want another pet....

BTW, we found Fortune in May 2003 on our front porch, so we don't know his exact age. We've had him for a decade, but he could have been older than that.
Hell, he wasn't even supposed to live a week when we found him, let alone ten years.

i found one in our backyard years ago by the pool. kept "elwood" for a few years and then gave him to a co-worker that had kids and liked the bird more than me. never really a fan of pet birds...
