You have to keep in mind that American tourists in Europe are not a representative sample of Americans.
It's getting better I think, the younger generations of Americans are more clued up about the rest of the world.
It used to be worse in the past when most Americans you met in Europe were rich middle aged ones on their first trip abroad and US news was reported as though there was no other country on the Earth.Comment

And I can only speak from my experience, maybe everything is different in US then what it seems from here.
