Where to start on this. First off, Angel and I have been going back and forth on this and my aim is to show her how shortsighted (which she usually is) her "shut off the taps" comments are. The nature of our relationships are far more complex than that and in order to "shut off the taps" all of what you just cited would go out the window. Whether you want to call it trade or aid, same difference really. We buy from you so as not to use up our own supply. We could just as easily buy more from other countries.

The military thing, how do you guage it since it is an indirect cost? The only way I can guage is to estimate what you guys would ACTUALLY need to defend a country your size and subtract it from how much we spend annually (which obviously protects you...NORAD alone is billions).

Not really, unlike Mexico, Canada is a fairly semi-secure, stable nation.

Most of them probably don't need either, they could capture a freighter and land right in NY or Boston harbor. Rumor has it, that's what the terrorists are actually trying to do because Mexican immigrant workers really don't like terrorists anymore than you or I. Nor does the RCMP.

But living near Buffalo, NY and "the Peace Bridge," I am well aware how important trade with Canada is. If you don't believe me, come to Buffalo some time and pull over on the Rte. 198 and watch the backup of tractor trailers that sometimes occurs on a Monday morning.

I visited Canada once and stayed at the apartment of an Iranian-Canadian. He told me about the missiles he heard landing near him during the Iran-Iraq war. They have another name for Canada: "Canadistan."

There are tons of Muslims (his family was Christian in Iran) in Canada, it's similar to the UK in that fashion.

I agree with you brian, but i think that this is where canada is going nobody wants an army overhere, we just want to be involve a little bit in peace keeping and that's it.

why would we need an army , if we don't get involve in war there is nothing to fear, the image of canada is respected troughout the whole wide world!
