God, you must be dense. Tectonic plates are always moving. Yes. They are floating around and moving. If they are moving, they only have so much space to move. So what happened? They bump into each other. Some rise up and cause mountains, others make volcanoes. And sometimes (sometimes!) when these plates bump into each other, they scrap across each other and cause earthquakes! Shocking!
And guess what! There have been several high-scale earthquakes like the one that just happened!

Notice all the volcanoes right near the epicenter of the earthquake...

It is interesting that these disasters seem to happen during Christmas vacation week. (ie, Iranian earthquake that killed like 20,000 last year) It leads to some great discussion with my 8th graders when we get back to school...
Did you know that the Earth is actually CLOSEST to the Sun in it's eliptical orbit during the winter months?
