She was baptized a Catholic though, by a bishop, no less, so I guess you could call me a wayward Catholic.

Doing it in private, to me, seems the most direct and best communication you can have. Jesus even said so Himself, right?
Having a spiritual leader can be of tremendous benefit, and there is a place for it - a huge place, especially early on in the journey - but it shouldn't be the most dominant thing.
Sounds like you're on the appropriate course for ya. Good to hear.
