Catholics Say Some Of The Bible May Be BS

Bible not all gospel, Catholics warned
    By Ruth Gledhill
    06oct05

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their 5 million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect "total accuracy" from the Bible.

"We should not expect to find in scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision," they say in "The Gift of Scripture". The document is timely, coming as it does amid the rise of the religious Right, in particular in the US.

Some Christians want a literal interpretation of the story of creation, as told in Genesis, taught alongside Darwin's theory of evolution in schools, believing "intelligent design" to be an equally plausible theory of how the world began.

But the first 11 chapters of Genesis, in which two different and conflicting stories of creation are told, are among those that this country's Catholic bishops insist cannot be "historical". At most, they say, they may contain "historical traces".

The document shows how far the Catholic Church has come since the 17th century, when Galileo was condemned as a heretic for flouting a near-universal belief in the divine inspiration of the Bible by advocating the Copernican view of the solar system.

Only a century ago, pope Pius X condemned modernist Catholic scholars who adapted historical-critical methods of analysing ancient literature to the Bible.

In the document, the bishops acknowledge their debt to biblical scholars. They say the Bible must be approached in the knowledge that it is "God's word expressed in human language" and that proper acknowledgement should be given both to the word of God and its human dimensions.

The Bible is true in passages relating to human salvation, but: "We should not expect total accuracy from the Bible in other, secular matters."

They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its "intransigent intolerance" and to warn of "significant dangers" involved in a fundamentalist approach, such as when a group considers itself permitted to use violence against others.

Of the notorious anti-Jewish curse in Matthew 27:25, "His blood be on us and on our children", a passage used to justify centuries of anti-Semitism, the bishops say these and other words must never be used again as a pretext to treat Jewish people with contempt.

Describing this passage as dramatic exaggeration, the bishops say it has had "tragic consequences" in encouraging hatred and persecution.

i prefer the term: "allegory" to "BS"

Jesus used parables to make points in the new testament. i don't see why God couldn't have done the same in the old...

Let me explain my last post.

I'm no longer Catholic because of the way they've basically allowed man-made doctrine to supercede what the Bible has warned against people doing.

It'll eventually lead into them probably disregarding the Bible entirely and having their members follow their directives, which probably will have some grand sinister agenda behind them.

I'm still a Christian and still believe it's the Word.

The Catholics have always allowed man made doctrine to override Christ's teachings. Paul is far more the basis of the Catholic Church than Christ Himself, as exemplified in the celibacy of priests and nuns, which is based on one verse from a guy with serious sexual hangups.

It was the Catholics who chose the "official" complilation of "The Bible" in the 4th century, which immediately kills the idea of it being the "literal Word of God", as God wasn't present at their meeting. Or if He was, He didn't speak up.

Hell, it's no wonder eastern orthodox christianity broke away from the catholics. They probably had a meeting with the catholics and came to the conclusion: I'll serve christ with all my heart, but I'll be damned if I'm denied some poon-tang on a regular basis!

HA! It began several centuries ago.

About time they said something like this.

Though they still are not being 100% truthful.

They won't dare say anything that might deplete their yearly revenue stream....though they literally have more money than God, and could exist for the rest of eternity with no contributions from the "flock".

I'll agree that they have enough money to burn in their fireplaces during those cold winters in Italy for the rest of history.

                      Excellent post, Warham.

                      Well said.

When will people learn that you can either take religion or leave it, but if you take it, God is in control and makes the rules. Follow his doctrine or go sit on a barstool on Sunday mornings.

There are too many churches out that are clearly being led by man instead of God. The Catholic church now appears to be one of them. It confesses this fact in public now. Of course, I've known it for years. I just "hold my fire" just so not to offend my Catholic friends here on this board and elsewhere. Not anymore.

                          OK.

                          You'll live through it, though.

It's not like we don't have enough religion-bashing threads around here. I said I don't agree with your religion, but I won't start a thread and attack you for it like some are prone to do around here. I might, however, start one and attack the Islam faith.

Among the "rules" listed in Leviticus is the names of the birds that you can and cannot eat.

One of those listed under the "cannot eat" category is the BAT.

Now, it's understandable that primitives like Moses and his boys might have assumed that anything with wings was a "bird".

                              But surely God knows better.

So how could God have made a rule which would make Him look like an idiot?
