You don't have to tell me. I've never talked to her on the phone, and I just know.

And... what are the French supposed to sound like? I mean, I would have asked the same if you had said "You sound as if you were German/American/Italian/Austrian/Australian/Finnish/Spanish/South African/Swiss/Belgian/Mexican etc...

If all you were was nothing more than being German, that would be really sad, wouldn't it? Aren't we all first and foremost WHO we are, and our nationality, being something that you've got by chance, very secondary? I pity anybody who's got nothing else to sell than the so-called "glories" of the countries where they were born... How can anybody be so ignorant to categorize people according to the place they were born?
How many French people do you know? If you knew that many, you wouldn't post such stupid crap as "you sound as if you were from such and such place, really...
I won't mention what my grandfathers did or didn't do, nor what yours did or didn't do, because they were our grandfathers: they were dear to us, but they were other PERSONS, in different circumstances.
I know about three dozen German people in person, and I'll tell you: all have that certain German "color" that is due to culture, a special everyday life, special references... But all of them only sound German as far as accent and the background context "I'm speaking to somebody who is German". But, as for the rest, what is essential, I'm always addressing different persons. each time, what really counts is WHO I'm speaking to, regardless of where they're from, which is nothing more than some indication.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't, but I'm going to tell you a true story... How I see things is directly linked to it.
In the middle of 1940, my grandad (my father's dad) was riding his bike (his car had been requisitioned) across the country, going to some place where an act of resistance was going to be prepared. Suddenly, as he told me years ago (he's dead now), he saw a column of smoke rising up in the air. Once he got close to where there was a fire, he quickly pulled where there was a crowd, near a plane that was on fire. There were unbearable screams coming out from the plane, that was a German plane...
My grandad asked around about what was going on, and the only answers he got were "It's a German pilot", "Let him die, that bastard", etc. He said "Bunch of jerks!" and ran to the plane, got the pilot out of it, and took him away. The plane exploded very shortly afterwards.
My grandad was made a prisoner in East Germany a few weeks later. In the end of 1941, the fellow prisoner he had told the story decided to tell it himself to the chief of the camp, who (after my grandfather's word was somebody like him) freed my grandad almost immediately (my grandfather didn't want to, because he was a Resistant and didn't want to look like he had done anything in favor of the Germans - he told me he had saved a pilot who was screaming but, even though he knew he it, his nationality didn't matter at all).
So, had roles been reversed, I think there would have been a crowd watching a French plane burn and hearing French screams, and a German guy would have saved the screaming pilot, for the same reasons...
I mean, I may sound like I am exaggerating, telling all this story just for a quote that might even be humorous at that... But as I don't know what there is behind it, I choose not to let it go. I don't know what "sounding French" means, nor do I know what sounding "German" or "Icelandic" or "Mexican" mean, and I don't want to know, and I'm even sure that it doesn't mean anything. We all are who we are, no matter our passports. What's written on them is not negligible, but what we are worth lies in our heart, guts, blood, etc.

I only hope that I sound like myself.

And, well, as FORD is the title of this thread, and though ELVIS is cool with me too, I pronounce my support to our Democrat buddy. Not only because I think "left", but because FORD, no matter what you may reproach him (I have nothing to reproach FORD myself), is a real fine dude.
Come on, ELVIS, you know it even better than I do.
