Hey BlonddGirl, getting many cravings for pickles or ice-cream lately?

Last time I went north, I had to give my life story to the Canadian border guard, because I had no passport. (Never needed one before. My 2 forms of government issued ID were good enough)

What was ironic was that the woman was herself an immigrant, and I doubt she had been in the country 5 years. Maybe she had done similar work in India before, or just hated Americans?

Coming back into the US - at Port Angeles.... no problem, just showed my two forms of ID.

And that happens to be the border crossing where a terrorist was caught in 1999 before Chimpy's lameassed policies were enacted, so I have no worries about how they do their jobs

The little prick who flew the plane into one of the towers crossed at Pembina ND many times. He was trained to fly a plane in Minnisota. Thats 2 hours from my house in a car.

But before 9/11, the border officers where much easier on us...

Since I never carry illegal stuff and my record is clean, I have no worries exept for them going through my luggage and mess things up... and... missing my flight (because I'm always last minute)...

It's not going to stop there, either! Soon we need a card to cross the border as well. Border cards, to be exact. I crossed over last year at least 3 times and the officials were so tough on us because we were young. I've always had my car or truck searched thoroughly. But in the end, they are just doing their job. Does make you feel safer in a sense.

Yes of course, I'd rather have them be more careful than less...
I am just frustrated about how it became... the fact that it used to be a lot safer to fly and that the relations Canadian/American where much friendlier alltogether...

In the 60' people say that you barely had to show any I.D., and all they where saying is; "Welcome, have a nice trip"...
If a Canadian wanted to go get some work (temporary or permanant) in the States, all he had to do is go to an immigration office and ask for a green card, wich he received instantly (almost no questions asked)!

That was then... now, there is too much shit going on everywhere... everyone has to be treated with suspicion... no matter what you look like or apear to be...

I just don't like officers... period.
Police, immigration, custom etc...

Eaven if I have nothing to hide* or to worry about... I don't like dealing with them.

I get to cross those borders and get searched pretty often. It piss me off every time...
They pick and chose some and I always think "why ME"

When I went to Canada in August 2001, about 2 weeks before you know what, I drove through the Blaine border crossing at about 10 PM. Totally spontaneous road trip... didn't have a thing packed.

Prepared to stop at the checkpoint, and the Canadians just waved us on through without even stopping. And on the way back in, minor traffic jam on the US side, about a 20 minute wait, but all I had to show them was my drivers license.

Damn, those were the days

And like I said, with THOSE laws the way they were, we managed to stop the terrorist who was going to light up the West Coast to celebrate the millenium. Fucking with civil liberties and making border crossing a pain in the ass hasn't made me feel any safer.

Paying $100 for a fucking passport to drive around BC for a week sure as Hell won't either.

We where a team in a bus full (with all luggages in the btm) and at the U-S border, the officer would just get in the bus, talk a little with the driver, take a vague look at us and say; "Have fun kids"!

What worries me more is that I heard some stories from people who got their cars torn up and seats removed to search for drugs. In the end, they were innocent and had nothing illegal to hide. Still, no apology or cover for the damages. Rules are rules.

We all heard that story but I don't know anybody to whom it really happened...
I would be devastated if that was to happen to me!

When you enter the States (or Canada), you are subject to search and questionning. If you don't want that, you don't cross the borders. As a visitor, the visited country has no obligation to let you in and can refuse your entry for absolutely no reason at all... it's a right (just like you can refuse entry to anyone in your own home).

I've been strip searched once at the U-S border in Windsor... my boyfriend at the time really looked like a drug dealer (he was not). They had a female (who looked like a man) oficer to do the job... she didn't touch me. Fortunately, I could keep my underwear, orelse I would have been really pissed off and frustrated!
They didn't find anything but ended up refusing me, without valid reasons... just suspicious feelings...

That's just how it is... it can really suck!
