Bingo. It's what the conflict in Iraq is all about. Sunnis, Shias, I think that's all secondary to the real war: control of an oil-rich land that is absolutely, unquestionably up for grabs right now. Barely ANYONE is fighting in the name of God, but in the name of God who has bequethed this land to US.

Same reason why the US is busy "liberating" the Iraqi people, but sitting on its thumbs regarding the situations in, say, Chad, Darfur, or Sarajevo. Not much from a realpolitik perspective to be gained in the desert.

thats so true. Just because someone uses religion as a cloak for there actions doesn't mean thats the case. Everyone in the middle east wants the best land, or the land of their ancestors.
