Yeah, I used to work at a bank. Any cash in or out totaling $10k+, we had to fill out a govt. reporting form. It was surprising how many cash deposits we got for $9,900.

Well, if I knew that my deposit was going to be held up for five fucking days a while back, I'd asked for checks of less than $9,500 or so...

This is simply a penalty and gov't intrusion that doesn't work for the reason you've stated...

Some have argued that it's used selectively against some for political purposes (i.e. some deposits are held up longer than others and receive more scrutiny)...

Well they passed those laws in response to the massive amounts of money being laundered by banks, primarily in Miami, for the drug cartels in the early 80's. Sometimes laws have a legitimate function and then are used for illegitimate purposes later on...which is why the Patriot Act is so dangerous.

Yeah, I know some of the resident partiers might see the line of morality a bit blurred. But it is the law....and in this case, it is there for a reason.

Did you ever think about this guy getting totally fucked on his finances from having 20 grand stolen for years? Having to pay a lawyer to get your own money back? Would you be able to pay your mortgage and car payments all year if someone stole 20 grand from you? Good for you if you can.

At least if they found a bag of pot or something they'd have some case. This is just theft. These guys steal people's money, their fucking houses, boats, cars, anything, and it all goes back into their budget so they can get better pay and more guns and steal more money and houses. It's sickening and completely against what America is supposed to be

Fact of the matter is you don't know the facts.

I can only assume as can you. I live in a Border Town. I see and deal with truckers on a regular basis. No one is going to carry around $23k in cash as spending dough. If they make that money through a private courier shipment, they will be paid by cashiers check or some other document that leaves a paper trail.

With all the laws involving trucking, you do not carry that much cash when you are crossing the border checkpoints. Unless you are stupid and forgetful (which might have been the case here). Or you just dropped a load off of contraband and you hope you're not searched and confiscated of your profits.

Come on....what's more far fetched. This guy was actually carrying his CASHED PAYCHECK in his wallet and he was going home to feed his family and pay his mortgage.

Or....there was something fishy with this scenario. If you were ICE, would you have let him go.

Stop fighting the man all the time. It's so high school.

I guess I deserve the whole degrading response since it appears I took my frustrations out on you.

I actually do know some facts. Or I know the lack of facts. They didn't find any drugs. So what case do they have?

It's not "high school" to disagree with bullshit laws that regard seizing people's property and intruding into people's lives as the so called good of the people. One of this country's guiding principles was individual rights.

If these idiots would actually do something useful instead of waging their war on drugs, you wouldn't need to worry about how shady it is to be driving around with $23,000. I'm not naive, in fact far from it. I can think of few legitimate reasons why he was carrying that much cash. But it's none of my business, or the pigs, or your business.

Until you could be thrown in jail at any moment for your lifestyle, don't judge me for "fighting the man"

You must be a cop or have a lot of cop friends the way you're swinging from their nutz.

It has nothing to do with driving a truck, douchebag. It really has nothing to do with the drug trade, either, since he's not charged with anything drug-related. Some people just don't fucking get it.
