When I listened to the campaign speech Obama gave in Metro-Detroit, he said we had the abandoned factories right there.

Detroit should become our green tech manufacturing capital. The railway system, the factories, and the shipping via the Detroit River/Great Lakes. All of it sitting there rotting. Plus, a highly specialize workforce.

That's the campaign promise I want Obama to keep. Look at the unemployment rate in Michigan and Detroit, compared to the rest of the nation......I feel sorry for Haiti but that's called Tuesday in Detroit

Nick would probably be able to elaborate on this further, being the resident WWII buff, but - didn't the US manufacturing sector transform itself in record time (with far more limited technology) in response to the War Effort after the Pearl Harbor attack? Companies that made lawn chairs or whatever re-tooled and were making bullets and everything else the military needed in little time after Pearl Harbor (and women went to work in factory jobs replacing the male factory workers who went into the service). What more motivation than say, the extinction of the American way do people need to pull something like that off again, only towards green manufacturing rather than munitions??

I want to say AMF tooled up to make wartime hardware from their regular manufacturing but I can't say for sure (without GARgling that is) that they weren't more geared to heavy equipment, and went into leasure products after WWII...

Detroit kicked ass and took names during WWII. My family, who weren't off to war were working OT making the tanks, auto, and tons of other various parts. Think the Left Coast made planes and ships, too.

New York, Pittsburgh, Ohio and a ton of other manufacturing/steel producing places.

Think about all the cotton, food, leather and everything else we made right at home....In some way, shape or form most every State in The Union chipped in.

Yeah, if we circled the wagons like that again but for going green, we wouldn't need half the oil we import.......5, 6 years tops.
