Yep, importing is too expensive. Unfortunately, it's too risky to to either start up one's own business and/or decide what to manufacture that's not a basic need. You wouldn't know if it would sell or not.

Clearly you know little of the world around you...

Virtually every item sold in the US could be made here. Many every day items the raw materials are produced here, shipped off-shore, manufactured and shipped back... all at a lower cost than if it were produced locally.

Importing isn't the cost factor... labor is a primary driver. Pay some poor soul 10 cents an hour and work them 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Government subsidies on infrastructure are another... take whatever land build a factory... no consideration for the environment, taxes, toxic materials and waste... no regulations, OSHA, etc...

Simple senario just for the mentally challenged such as you Steve... take any brand of sports/tennis shoe... Nike for example. Here's how it works... steal some land, bulldoze it, erect a cheap metal shed... buy used decade old automated manufacturing machines cheap... power it up. Hire 50 9-15 years olds, pay them a dollar a day. They can crank out 50 pairs an hour at a cost of about $5.00 a pair in materials and labor... then export them at $20 a pair delivered... which are sold at $80 a pair at your local shoe store. The same shoes would cost $100 to build here...
