I dunno man, I don't believe you can use sports as an accurate barometer of loyalty or patriotism. For one thing, in my area people will jump on the latest winner of an event because by and large they are front running phonies. Each year right after the Super Bowl, you'd be amazed at how many people have the champion's bumper stickers or license plates adorning their cars. Folks that have never visited New Orleans or New England (let alone can find either on a map) proclaim themselves to be life long fans. Remember when the Miami Heat won the championship a few years ago? People that were unaware we even had a basketball team went out, bought merchandise and started wearing it until St. Louis won the World Series later that year, a team whose hats and shirts they then promptly started wearing.

I believe it is a perfect barometer. These people aren't rooting for the team. I'd bet 80% of them gathered to watch couldn't name Mexico's starting 11. They're rooting for the COUNTRY.
