Every other ethnic group in America is referred to as a(n) _____-American. The pre-fix is an adjective of the country of origin except "African-American." Africa is a continent not a country. There's no consistency here. Who made this up?

Because the myriad of African states, tribes, cultures, et al were largely destroyed, homogenized, or marginalized by White European cultures while they were dividing the mineral wealth of Africa, and drawing up arbitrary nation-states based on which parts of Africa they controlled. None of these current countries was based on any sort of traditional national boundaries such as rivers, ethnic/tribal disparities, mountains, depressions, forests, etc. Most of the "countries" in Africa are postcolonial abortions and have almost nothing to do with the states/kingdoms that existed prior to the Age of Imperialism. On top of all this complete social upheaval--during slavery-great pains were taken by both slave traders and the new owners on the Southern Plantations to destroy and marginalize any sort of ethnic identity blacks had in their "old world." By the way, I have just as much of a problem with black nationalists that attempt to draw pseudo-linage or create utopian fantasies in order to make up for what in a huge void in their Pre-American ancestry in order to compete with European and Asian Americans on some level. Just as I have a problem with the largely under or uneducated morons here attempting to enforce the standard of their dominant culture on the dominated culture that has historically been politically, economically--and to a lessor extent--socially marginalized and has only recently obtained any sort of pretension of equality...
