I'm still trying to figure out how Obama care is helping me. My fucking insurance premiums are going up 20% on renewing. My wife is stressed the fuck out and so am I.
Thanks for your help on this Obama. I really appreciate that shit.Comment

You just described Obama care in your post. Pay your inflated premiums or go to jail. To be honest, I think we are going to dumb Obamacare or just ignore it.No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

There are nice hospitals in other countries but you have to be rich to get into them. I have relatives in Alberta and they all come down here if they need surgery done. They can afford it and it's better in the states. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

There are always people who claim that they want to leave, but people always think that the grass is greener on the other side, right? A lot of people claim to hate their jobs, but they never leave those either....
But yes, we do have lot of taxes. Such is life. The Power Of The Riff Compels MeComment

I used to think that but then I discovered that the average Brit pays the same if not less tax than the average American.
Here's an example
A little while ago, I tried to estimate the differences between the US and UK tax burdens. Keen to give more accurate figures, and on the suggestion of deepali,
You are getting screwed. I think a lot of it is to do with the military insanity.
We also get a lot more days vacation BTW.Comment

I don't think so, remember they have sales tax too although at a lower rate and there are a lot of VAT exemptions here.
Also the example I linked included sales tax/VAT in any case.
In other things like booze and cigarette tax the US has caught up in the last few years.
I did an online quote for healthcare insurance if I was in the US and I would be at least $1200 a month for the family.Comment

I've no doubt that health care is more expensive. However, sales taxes are lower and the US is much cheaper for fuel. Most of the US students I teach do little but piss and moan about how expensive life is here (they still seem to eat a fuck of a lot though :D)
I also doubt that booze costs as much. How much is a pint in your city centre? £3? Is a pint of beer really $6 in America? Are cigarrettes really $11 for a pack of 20? I have no idea but I can't imagine that they are.....The Power Of The Riff Compels MeComment

It's not $2 to the £ any more unfortunately, closer to $1.5.
Petrol/Gas is still much cheaper in the US about half the price but they have to travel a lot further.
Cigarettes are a bit cheaper too, $5 compared to $7. Booze out of a shop is about the same nowadays, in a bar you have to buy imported or premium beer(domestic stuff is piss weak) which is about $4.50-$5 so about the same.
Things have changed a lot in the last 10-15 years and especially now the exchange rate is poor.
Anyway this argument has nothing to do with cost of living it's about % tax and what you get for it.Last edited by Seshmeister; 06-30-2010, 05:11 PM.Comment

The higher taxes are probably somewhat exaggerated, since the U.K. probably spends a fraction of its GNP on its military budget than does the U.S.Comment
