        No they aren't.

If the price of gas doubles it only puts up the price 15% at our pumps because we pay 85% tax or something along those lines can't be bothered working it out exactly.

Can't say I disagree with you but........
Gas is cheaper in the US than a lot of other countries for two main reasons. 1) OPEC sells it's oil in US dollars which means we don't have to exchange our currency into dollars before buying our oil. 2) Other countries tax the shit out of their gasoline; especially, in places like Europe where they have public transportation alternatives.

            Very true.

Plus the US is very big geographically. The longest journey I can make is less than 600 miles before I end up in the sea.

Thanks for the advice bro, but given my own personal experience over the years, you don't exactly need to be Columbo to piece together just how this situation would work out.

I own part of a company that makes alternative fuels. I think biodiesel is going to be the fuel of agriculture in the near future. In fact one wheat farmer in Washington state is making his own biodiesel to run all his farm machinery. The crop that he extracts the diesel from is excellent to use to plant in plots where the soil is shot from growing wheat, so you can make diesel off of your crop rotation.

I expect oil company paid off politicians to throw a shoe in the works of this. The EPA will find an excuse to shut local biodiesel down by requiring huge fees to have a license to do so. Big oil is becoming obsolete in many ways but they have enough money to buy off politicians who make laws and regulations to keep that 100 year old buggy whip product going. You can even make biodiesel off of coal plant emissions in clean coal plants. It's very cutting edge technology but of course big oil and their environmental scams want to scare people from building and using. So they will build some horribly inefficient and expensive wind mills for show and keep polluting the environment with oil spills. BP, Shell and Exon/Mobil finance all this global warming panic and notice the proposed legislation just keeps us on their old products but makes it more expensive. Notice they have a real hate for coal but oil is still wonderful.

                  Have a nice day...

What's causing the food prices to shoot up is floods, cold, and drought. Lot's of crop failures this year. Actually we are awash in oil. Those high prices are set by OPEC and not a free world market. Like I said, all our oil come from our home state. It's refined into gasoline in Sinclair, Wyoming and then is trucked up here. But we have to pay the OPEC oil price because an oil company that didn't charge that price would be ran out of business in a hurry. So it's obvious the western oil companies are involved in OPEC as well.

The world is not paying a free market price for oil at all. It's paying a rigged price.

One thing I think most people aren't aware of is all major local stations sell the same gasoline. It's whatever comes out of the pipeline head or refinery. The only gas stations that differ are Maverik stores. Don't buy their gas because they buy refinery tank bottoms and sell it cheaper. They filter it but it's the lowest grade of gas you can get and has a lot of water suspended in the ethanol in it.

All gas is the same and how they get the different octane ratings is chemical additives at the pump. So 85 octane is the same as 90, but the ignition rate is higher on the 90 due to chemical additives.

You only need high octane for high altitude and high compression engines so in most cases you can run on 85 octane just fine and save some money. I only have a problem with 85 octane above 8000 feet above sea level where the engine will start to knock on hills.
