It was more than just growing apart: former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed late Monday that his marriage was on the rocks because his wife Maria Shriver left him, and had done it after finding out that he fathered a child with a household employee.
In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, the movie star – who left office earlier this year – admitted his infidelity was what derailed their 25-year marriage.
“After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” he said, referring to fathering the child. “I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
“I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time,” he added. “While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not.”

Shriver’s spokesman had no comment on Schwarzenegger’s Monday statement.
The Times is not revealing the name of the household staffer nor that of her child to protect their privacy.
In an interview with the Times on Monday before Schwarzenegger made his statement, the woman initially claimed that the father of the child was the man who was her husband at the time. She said she retired from her job working for the family earlier this year because she had reached her goal of two decades on the job. “I wanted to achieve my 20 years, then I asked to retire,” she said. The family gave her a severance payment and she “left on good terms with them.”
When the paper informed her of Schwarzenegger’s admission, she declined to comment further.
Shriver, a former NBC News reporter, moved out of the couple’s home in Brentwood earlier this year, but their troubles were not widely known until the couple announced their separation in a joint statement last week.
