I don't consider the slaughter of 20 children (and 6 adults) to be an "opportunity" for anything.

But what it should be is a goddamned wake up call. Nobody needs to own assault weapons, and mental cases like Lanza and his mother shouldn't even be allowed to own a goddamn super soaker.

What I think it should be is this: a terrorist act.

Person that sold the weapons? Giving aid to the enemy.

Use the SN and find the original owner....throw their ass into Gitmo.

How can we protect them, when ASSHOLES LIKE YOU are trading military weapons for dirt bikes and a set of 20" rims to some other ASSHOLE you've never met....AND without a receipt?

That doesn't happen much anymore and this is the reason. The person who originally purchased the firearm had to fill out a ATF form and the government has a record of that firearms serial number and who it was sold to. If you sell that firearm to a stranger and it is used in a murder then the investigation brings that gun back to the original owner and you risk being the target of all sorts of lawsuits.

So what most people do when they sell a gun is sell it on consignment at a gun dealer. They sell the gun and take a percentage and the new purchaser has to fill out the paperwork and pass the FBI background check like they were purchasing a new gun. I don't know anyone who would be stupid enough to sell a gun to someone they don't know. They did 30 years ago. They don't now. People used to hang guns on their wall then or keep them in big display cases. They don't now. People steal them.

The bad guys are going to have them regardless. The only way to get them would be to turn the country into a police state and even at that you aren't going to get them all.

It's not the guns anyways. It's society falling apart for a number of reasons. Going after the guns is just a feel good thing plus the politicians and bankers want them gone because they fear the public may turn on them once the public wakes up to all the shit that has been done to them. So they use the media to get everyone all stirred up and emotional and sell the feel good thing to do which usually is not the smart thing to do.

Assault weapons ban won't be in dems' gun bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided that a proposed assault weapons ban won't be part of a gun control bill the Senate plans to debate next month, the sponsor of the ban said Tuesday, a decision that means the ban stands little chance of survival.

Instead, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she will be able to offer her ban on the military-style firearms as an amendment. Feinstein is all but certain to need 60 votes from the 100-member Senate to prevail, but she faces solid Republican opposition and likely defections from some moderate Democrats.

"I very much regret it," Feinstein, D-Calif., told reporters of Reid's decision. "I tried my best."

Feinstein, an author of the 1994 assault weapons ban that expired after a decade, said that Reid, D-Nev., told her of the decision on Monday.

There are 53 Democrats in the Senate, plus two independents who usually vote with them.

An assault-type weapon was used in the December massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that revived gun control as a top issue in Washington. Banning those firearms was among the proposals President Barack Obama made in January in response to those slayings.

The assault weapons ban was the most controversial of the major proposals to restrict guns that have been advanced by Obama and Senate Democrats. Because of that, it had been expected that the assault weapons measure would be left out of the initial package the Senate considers, with Democrats hoping the Senate could therefore amass the strongest possible vote for the overall legislation.

Having a separate vote on assault weapons might free moderate Democratic senators facing re-election next year in Republican-leaning states to vote against the assault weapons measure, but then support the remaining overall package of gun curbs.

Gun control supporters consider a strong Senate vote important because the Republican-run House has shown little enthusiasm for most of Obama's proposals.

Feinstein said Reid told her there will be two votes.

One would be on her assault weapons ban, which also includes a ban on ammunition magazines that carry more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The second would just be on prohibiting the high-capacity magazine clips.

Many Democrats think the ban on large-capacity magazines has a better chance of getting 60 votes than the assault weapons ban.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved four gun control measures this month, including Feinstein's barring assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The others would expand required federal background checks for firearms buyers, increase federal penalties for illegal gun trafficking and boost school safety money.

La Grange, N.C. — A man and woman from La Grange were charged Monday afternoon in connection with a violent road rage incident that happened Sunday afternoon off U.S. Highway 70 in Carteret County.

According to investigators, Bradley Russell Turner fired several shots into a pickup truck after he was beaten by two men about 1 p.m. Video released by investigators showed Russell asking the driver of a pickup truck why he ran him off the road before the pickup truck driver and his passenger threw him to the ground.

Christy Marie Turner provided Bradley Turner with the gun from inside the SUV during the altercation.

No one was seriously injured in the incident.

Bradley Turner, of 3432 Institute Road, is charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property, two counts of assault by pointing a gun, assault and battery, going armed to the terror of the public and injury to personal property. He received a $37,500 bond.
