Indigenous Groups: 'No Keystone XL Pipeline Will Cross Our Lands'

Indigenous Groups: 'No Keystone XL Pipeline Will Cross Our Lands'
Native American communities along proposed route vow resistance against 'black snake' pipeline
    - Sarah Lazare, staff writer

Native American communities are promising fierce resistance to stop TransCanada from building, and President Barack Obama from permitting, the northern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline.

"No Keystone XL pipeline will cross Lakota lands," declares a joint statement from Honor the Earth, the Oglala Sioux Nation, Owe Aku, and Protect the Sacred. "We stand with the Lakota Nation, we stand on the side of protecting sacred water, we stand for Indigenous land-based lifeways which will NOT be corrupted by a hazardous, toxic pipeline."

Members of seven Lakota nation tribes, as well as indigenous communities in Idaho, Oklahoma, Montana, Nebraska and Oregon, are preparing to take action to stop Keystone XL.

“It will band all Lakota to live together and you can’t cross a living area if it’s occupied,” said Greg Grey Cloud, of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, in an interview with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. “If it does get approved we aim to stop it.”

The indigenous-led 'Moccasins on the Ground' program has been laying the groundwork for this resistance for over two years by giving nonviolent direct action trainings to front-line communities.

"We go up to wherever we've been invited, usually along pipeline routes," said Kent Lebsock, director of the Owe Aku International Justice Project, in an interview with Common Dreams. "We have three-day trainings on nonviolent direct action. This includes blockade tactics, and discipline is a big part of the training as well. We did nine of them last summer and fall, all the way from Montana to South Dakota, as well as teach-ins in Colorado and a training camp in Oklahoma."

"We are working with nations from Canada and British Columbia, as well as with the people where tar sands are located," Lebsock added.

"As an example of this nonviolent direct action," explains Lebsock, in March 2012 people at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota held a blockade to stop trucks from transporting parts of the Keystone XL pipeline through the reservation.

In August 2013, members of the Nez Perce tribe blockaded megaloads traveling Idaho's Highway 12 to the Alberta tar sands fields.

Descendants of the Ponca Tribe and non-native allies held a Trail of Tears Spiritual Camp in Nebraska in November to prevent the construction of the pipeline.

More spiritual camps along the proposed route of the pipeline are promised, although their date and location are not yet being publicly shared.

The promises of joint action follow the U.S. State Department’s public release on Friday of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). This report has been widely criticized as tainted by the close ties between Transcanada and the Environmental Resource Management contractor hired to do the report.

While the oil industry is largely spinning the report as a green-light for the pipeline, green groups emphasize that it contains stern warnings over the massive carbon pollution that would result if the pipeline is built, including the admission that tar sands oil produces approximately 17 percent more carbon than traditional crude.

The release of the FEIS kicked off a 90-day inter-agency review and 30-day public comment period. The pipeline's opponents say now is a critical time to prevent Obama from approving the pipeline, which is proposed to stretch 1,179 miles from Alberta, Canada, across the border to Montana, and down to Cushing, Oklahoma where it would link with other pipelines, as part of a plan to drastically increase Canada's tar sands production.

The southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline — which begins in Cushing, passes through communities in Oklahoma and East Texas, and arrives at coastal refineries and shipping ports — began operations last month after facing fierce opposition and protest from people in its path.

"Let's honor the trail blazers from the Keystone XL south fight," said Idle No More campaigner Clayton Thomas-Muller. "Time for some action, and yes, some of us may get arrested!”

And after watching that second video, I think Schultz is even more of a fucking sellout and a shill. His arguments are completely shot down by his own guests, and he just keeps cutting them off with KKKoch scripted talking points.

And I suspect Ed must have a financial interest in this Bakken (rhymes with Frackin') Shale horseshit the way he keeps talking about that, and trying to divert the subject from the toxic tarpits of Alberta.

Bottom line is that the US gets absolutely NO long term gains from this fucking disaster and a whole shitload of long term damage. It's just not worth it by any measure of the facts, aside from KKKoch propaganda,

There's enough oil in the Bakken oil field to run the US for 100 years. We don't need that pipeline. It also would be nice to save our oil for a chemical base instead of burning it for energy. We really need a president to do what John F. Kennedy did with the space program. Issue a ten year challenge to get off of oil. The problem is our politicians are bought and paid for by the people who benefit from oil and wars.

Henry Kissinger negotiated a deal with the Saudis that the US would not use it's oil supplies and buy from them instead if they only accepted US Dollars as payment. This deal made the dollar the world's currency because other countries had to convert to dollars to buy their oil. It made the Federal Reserve Bank the most powerful bank on the planet since they control the supply of those dollars. Not only did the people in the US get screwed the rest of the world did as well.

Now with the BRICS nations refusing to trade in US dollars the Federal Reserve Bank has lost 25% of the world's economy. They are losing control of the world. The petro dollar gimmick is done. Time to give the Fed the boot and issue dollars through the US treasury again. Time to use our own oil and hey it's 2014, do we really want to hunt and gather our energy. Maybe the president should make a ten year goal to get on something better. Since the apollo program this country has not had a big project worth while. We just get into war after war feeding the military industrial complex. That shit has to end. I think we are all onto that scam as well. The rest of the world can take care of itself, we don't need to police it and frankly our policing seems to kill a lot of people. Yeah we don't need to spew depleted uranium around anymore.

As far as Ed Schultz and the media go. They are bought and paid for employees. We went from over 200 media companies in the 1980's down to just five. Then if you look at things deeper they fall under the same conglomerate. We live in the age of monopoly. The government does nothing about it. In fact when Standard and Poors downgraded The Federal Reserve Bank's bond rating since they aren't paying their bondholders, The US Justice Department sued them.

So the departments that are supposed to regulate this corruption are in on it as well and most the US congress is getting rich insider trading the stock market. Nothing is done. That's where we are.

The mainstream media is all one big joke. It's bought and paid for. Ed Schultz is earning his check. Who knows what he really is. Rachel Maddow is just an employee. If she doesn't tow the line she's out of a job. Plenty of people on the sidelines wanting her job too.

The thing is we went from having The News where the reporters stayed politically neutral to having opposing propaganda channels. They want a left vs right media because that helps with the divide and conquer strategy. When you have the liberals and conservatives constantly fighting they are too distracted to see the bankers are taking everything. All they had to do was spend the last 30 years buying up media companies and consolidating them. It's all about consolidation.

Maybe Ed being a sellout is a good thing. It's making people think for once. Hey something is wrong here. I just can't take MSNBC at face value anymore.

You DO realize that frackin' the Bakken is only going to speed up the eruption of that Yellowstone Super Volcano that will make your home town resemble my front yard, right?

And it seems like "Big Eddie" has flip flopped yet again on the Death pipeline......

Was he really somehow clueless about the existence of this aquifer before?

Doesn't seem likely for a guy who claims Fargo, North Dakota as his home.

Probably a matter of his ratings tanking when he pissed off his "Liberal" audience.

As for me, I don't have MSNBC anyway, but I'm not going to be in a big rush to get back to his radio show. Hopefully he's really come to his senses, but he should have fucking known better in the first place.

Honestly, I never fully trusted the guy....

When he started out in 2004 (nationally speaking) he was calling himself a "Democrat" but still supportive of the PNAC war agenda (if not so much the Chimp himself) and 100% behind the DLC coronation of Judas IsKerryot.

I wasn't at all happy when XM radio gave him the 9 AM time slot and delayed Thom Hartmann as a result.

And there was the KPTK 1090 forum in Seattle in 2006 when he jumped down Mike Malloy's ass, because Malloy dared to question NuttyYahoo bombing the fucking shit out of Lebanon for no valid reason. Schultz accused him of "hating Israel" or some stupid shit like that.

I liked him a little more in recent years because he seemed to be on the right side of the argument for health care and labor issues. He was willing to accept "Obamacare" as a solution, but he kept at it with the labor stuff, and still opposes the TPP (or the Southern Hemisphere & Asian Trade Agreement - SHAFTA - as Thom Hartmann calls it) to this day.

But the Keystone Death Pipeline - that's inexcusable. I truly hope he's serious about opposing it now.... but I'm back to being suspicious about what team Ed is playing for.

The Bakken isn't anywhere near the Yellowstone cauldera. Plus the magma chamber goes west under Idaho, not east towards the Dakotas. They drill oil in Wyoming closer than that field. I don't know if they are Fracking the Bakken or just using conventional drilling. Plus Dick Chenney lives here. I blow up he does too.

Regarding the yellowstone magma chamber. There have been proposals to dig wells to harness the geothermal potential off the hotspot like they do in Iceland. They could totally make it where you don't see the plant using condensers to turn the steam to water. All sorts of cool ideas on that but I think big oil shoots it down.

I haven't read into as much on this as I could have, but I guess my question is why can't they just use the existing Phase I through III?

Is the XL portion merely a shortcut, or what am I missing?
