They didn't invent idiot lights they just added new ones. The only reason it was a failure was because Ford had other models in direct competition with the Edsel. They had Mercs and Lincolns that were about the same as the Edsel models but they already had brand recognition behind them to improve sales. The Edsels couldn't compete with those models and were eventually discontinued.Beware of DogComment

FORD (no relation) was trying to compete with the GM business model. They had just recently become a public company and not under exclusive family ownership. So some suit in an office somewhere thought it would be a great idea to have different brands under the FORD (no relation) umbrella, much like GM did with Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac.
FORD was trying to postion their Lincoln brand as the counterpart to Cadillac (the "luxury" cars marketed to the richer folks) so they thought they needed another brand inbetween that and the main FORD product lines, and that's where Edsel came in.
The biggest irony of the Edsel brand names is that other car companies would later use the same product names, such as "Citation" (later used by Chevy) and Pacer (later used by AMC) and the cars were pretty much flops under those companies as well.Eat Us And Smile
