A family stupidly stops at a gas station and the wife goes into the gas station to buy some shit. A guy comes up, sticks a pistol in the window of the van and blows the brains of the dad all over the van, in front of the kids. Wife comes out and sees the husband deader than hell. For what? Crumbs off the table? Yeah, not really.

Well, as much as I agree we need to tighten up background checks and all that, it's kind of hard to judge future intent. I've read reports today that say the killer was a nice guy. And then he went either ultra postal or jihadi. So unless you're a raving lunatic it's kinda hard to keep someone from buying a gun.

How's about this for a start, here's a concrete, real world suggestion: Maybe we should require gun purchasers to go through the same training and in depth FBI background check that us concealed carry permit holders have to go through. The whole process only costs 155 bucks in my state - and that number is fairly consistent in most states. I know the far right will scream "that there's infringifyin on my right to bear arms!" No, it's not. If you can't afford 150 bucks for the permit process then you can't afford to drop 300 to 800 bucks on that fancy new pistol you want. Or that new 800 buck AR. Of course, that wouldn't catch someone who is secretly plotting to do something really bad. But it would catch some people that a normal instant background check may not flag.

See? It ain't that hard to come up with solutions. It's getting the extreme left and the extreme right to stop screaming long enough to make it happen that's the issue. Why? Because neither side wants ANY change in the laws. If they did they'd shut the fuck up and let the people in the middle lead the way.
