I have a little Fender Frontman practice amp. That thing has been dropped, dragged, abused by children and keeps going. I think it's a pretty well made box.
The only solid state Marshal amp I ever had was a Lead 12. Man I wissh I still had that amp. It was very well built and had a Celesian speaker in it.
The only Marshall product I ever had that I thought was shit was a little 9 Volt practice amp that looks like a mini half-stack. That thing sure didn't last long.
For the most part, I think Marshall stuff is good quality.

I got a Marshall DSL 401 last year, it's a 40W Tube amp. I'm not gigging these days and I thought it should still be loud enough for a jam with live drums in an emergency.
Great warm sound but maybe a bit expensive.
Overdriven you don't really need a distortion pedal at least for an EVH sound and it doesn't have that 'buzzy' sound you get from a Valvestate.
I'm no expert about what's available these days though...
