      They rule!

Here is a pic of my Gibson (#1 Son) and my JB Player neck-thru-body Strat (#2 Son):

How does the Epiphone quality compare to the Gibson quality? I don't have a V and I have GAS for one.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Hahaha, yes Steve I do enjoy things besides Zep and VH. Hell, one minute I could be playing a Ventures tune, and the next minute playing Wildwood Flower. My senior year in high school I made the All-State Jazz Band on guitar. Am I a jazz musician? NO, but I'm a good faker. :D

Finish, construction and playability are flawless.

The pickups suck ass, though I am sure replacing them with Seymour Duncan PAF clones or some other good after-market pickups will rectify that problem.

I cannot even begin to turn up volume or overdrive settings using it, or it will squeal like it is being murdered horribly.

So it is relegated to it's case, while it awaits the day I decide to replace the pickups.

Some people need to get away from Fender snobbery ;-)

Actally I've played some late 80's Squires that been equal and in some cases superior to Fenders.

I'm not alone here either - I know several guys that will testify to the samething - the 87/88 Squire Strat was and still is a good year - hell of a guitar for not a lot of money.

True - todays suck monkey balls. They look cheap and sound cheap. But if you can get a late run 80's one, that's a different story.

Nope, standing by that statement. The Japanese ones were cool for a nanosecond, but as soon as they started being made in Taiwan, Korea, etc. --- utter shitsville.

Still it amazes me that late 70s/early 80s (real) FENDERs are commanding top dollar today, when they were considered to be SHIT (because they WERE/ARE) back in the day...

And I respect that - don't get me wrong, all I'm saying is that Squire (as you point out) did once make some good guitars for a relatively short time.

My good old Ibanez RG 450 DX is wonderful. The neck feels wonderful and fast while the action is super low, and the floyd rose tremelo system keeps in tune. Not only does it sound radical, it looks friggin' awesome too with a deep blue paint job and a purple mirror pickgaurd.

I love that beast, it suits me in every possible way.

I can´t let this blanket statement stand like that! I have a dozen late 70s Fenders and all but one of them rock! Back in those days Fenders were, what Gibson still is nowadays, guitars you had to go and check out before you bought them. I got all of mine used and checked em all out before I bought them. For every one I bought, I passed on 3-4.

Part of the very bad rep these instruments are getting is due to the fact, that most people with good ones in their collections aren´t selling. If I had a few lemons, off to evilBay they would go. They´d find their way to a collector´s home who doesn´t know shit from shit and probably inherited more money than he can spend anyhow.

That´s what is keeping the prices up on many markets for used gear, limited availability. If you´re a rich kid and wanna look like Ritchie Blackmore, then you have to get a 70s strat, even if you can´t play to save your mom! Hell, every time I find a beat up 70s beginners guitar by a company that´s still around at a flea market, I get it for about 30-50 Euros and sell it on evilBay for three times as much. Suits me, even if I don´t understand what people want those twisted and warped pieces of firewood for!

Every now and then some Asians take pride in their work and whip out a good batch of Squiers, doesn´t happen often but it does happen. There was the Pro Tone series from Korea that´s beginning to fetch good money on evilBay. They might not be worth as much as people are already paying, but almost. The first batch of the latest Standard series was pretty good too, I have a Stratocaster VII that´s a great guitar for the little cash it cost me.

Needless to say that every time the word spreads that a certain Squier series is fantastic value for money, Fender Musical Instruments Inc. drops it, can you say Squier 51!
