Gary isn't that bad-at least he's written some kick-ass songs in his day-not with Van Halen-but still in his day. I still think it's a shame that he had to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar in 1999 to get work. I know Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) did too-but that was just a singing voice for the film.

I have no problem with Sam as a shitty solo artist; not my cup of tea but plenty of autistic children and farmers seem to dig him. I hate the fucker in VH! I hate his bloated rosacea and sandals; his backwoods banter and "joe white trash" personality. Douche rabbit - shitty music is for kids!
Gary gets a raw deal for being a good guy. Yeah, the VH gig was not the best move but who would turn it down? The cash was good, he was a real Van Halen fan and there is only so many Boston Baked Beans you can buy playing clubs. He sold out and cashed in; sounds like the American way to me.
Mezro...and all this Gary is gay shit...so what if he is?...so what if Dave is really bi?...a private life is just that...private...Got me a date with a shaved Asian. I know, I know; I think it's fucked!Comment

Gary walked into an impossible situation...there were the Roth fans, the REAL Van Halen fans, that had just seen their hopes crushed into dust with the fabled 1996 fiasco, so it was an impossible sell on that hand...plus, there were the sheep who were still broken-hearted that their gay superhero had been relegated back to a solo career (i.e. the cutout bins).
Realistically, the only Van Halen fans left were the Eddie fans, and that was about it - everybody else had been effectively alienated. I'm sure Gary probably brought some fans over with him as well from his Extreme days, who hadn't previously been into Van Halen at all, but I could probably count them on one hand and have fingers left over.
As far as Gary's concerned, I don't hate him at all. As mentioned, the set list was pretty good, Eddie's playing at that time was great, and Gary did a lot to due credit to the catalog that came before him - not only Roth, but Hagar's as well (and fairly enough, I suppose). But he stepped into an impossible situation from jump street - he knew it, Van Halen knew it and the fans knew it. Had they actually come up with a really dynamite album, who knows? Unfortunately, Ed took over the project and between himself and Mike Post's butchering (should have stayed with Law & Order, buddy!), the lack of Mike in the studio and a programmer handling the majority of the drum work, what you got was essentially a solo Ed record.
And it tanked, which should answer any questions as to how well a solo Ed record would do.
No hatred for Gary, though. He did the best he could with what he was given, I think...even if his demeanor on the stage was rather...effeminate...

I NEVER liked Hagar. I thought his solo stuff sucked. When I heard that he was in VH, it was like a double tragedy for me.
I'm from the Boston area and so Cherone was very popular around here and was always thought of as a good guy. He got himself into an ugly mess.
So, as much as I despise the Hag, I feel bad for Cherone.“Why do people say "grow some balls"? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding” ― Betty WhiteComment

Can't say I blame Cherone for taking the gig with Van Halen. The brothers had decided before Gary came out to 5150 in August, 1996 (well before the Sept MTV Awards appearance with Roth) that they weren't gonna do anything more with Roth, so if it wasn't Cherone it would have been some other singer other than Roth anyway.
Cherone may have thought he was going into a tough spot, but doubt he or Ed or Al predicted the backlash that ensued over the whole botched, aborted Roth fiasco. Cherone might have had a better chance if VH hadn't done those two songs with Roth in 1996 and INTENTIONALLY MISLED THEIR PRODIGAL CLASSIC FANBASE BY IMPLYING ROTH WAS BACK IN THE BAND AS AN INDUCEMENT FOR PEOPLE TO BUY THE BEST OF VOLUME ONE (deserving of caps).
Van Halen 3 had a terrible mix (Ed the production wizard at the helm exclusively, regardless of the album credits...............is it just me, or did VH sound their best when someone other than Ed and Al were in control of the mix?), the lyrics were simultaneously pompous and obscure, and seeing Cherone fondling his own ass onstage that MTV 1998 Live From Down Under Special didn't help matters any.
To his credit, Cherone saw the writing on the wall and bailed after one album and tour. He knows who the man is in terms of fronting Van Halen. Sammy Hagar still hasn't figured it out yet, as he is under the impression it's him.
Plus, Sam fobs lame criticisms about Dave and his tenure with band while never having brought anything to the band that was better (hint: singing in a higher natural key and having a string of cheesy power metal ballads with Van Hagar will never come close to diminishing the power and timelessness of the classic lineup, I say!).Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Ga y Cherone actually respected what came before him...much like Brian Johnson with AC/DC. so i will give him that. but Spermmy is just a fucking lying asshole. and yes, it's outright lying. not just exagerating. that shit head has taken it way beyond that. it's just downright lying.

por bastard. you know each song had some good p oints, aside form how many say i. but each song was 6:30 or 7min long..and thats too much. Without you was really good but was too long and drawn out, i could but it down to 3 minutes and have it be really solid.Originally posted by Terry
