After having some time to reflect on my recent attendance to the DLR concert in MN I need to retract some of my earlier comments. I had said I wouldn't see Dave again. Now, I feel that I would see him again most definitely. Dave rules! I think going into the show I had pretty high expectations & unrealistic ones because I have never seen him or Van Halen live before. After having some time to digest what I experienced I now realize how fortunate I was to be able to see Dave live and can now only hope for a reunion.

Hey, better late than never. Most people who have any negative comments about Dave make the same mistake. They feel the need to compare. Compare his voice to how it sounds on the recordings. Compare his moves to 25 years ago. Compare a small theater show to a Van Hagar arena show. Comparing is the only way some people have to evaluate an experience.

I went there expecting to hear great classis VH songs sung by the only voice that deserves to be singing them. And I was not disappointed. The rest was all icing on the cake.

First, location: Mystic Lake casino in Prior Lake Minnesota. Ballroom probably held about 2000 people and it was pretty full although good seats were available up to the last minute. Not a very good place to see a show. Pretty sterile. He played the same basic set that he has played since he went solo back around 1985. I have seen him plenty of times over the years and I sadly say that to me, most of the aura is gone. I know that isn't popular on this board but I think if you really look objectively you will come to the same conclusion.
The sound was ok but the backup vocals were WAY loud. You could barely hear Dave over the rest of the guys. Most of my aging concert mates were pretty dead throughout the show. Dave did his best to get all us going but not much luck.
Daves banter with the crowd was his typical shtick. Amusing but kinda corny and in my opinion he never really connected. Dave made no efforts to make contact with the crowd, didn't sign anything and only shook about 1 hand. To me this is kinda sad and when you compare it to the VH tour it is apples and oranges. Anyone who went to the VH shows and sat within the rings (I got to twice) will know what I am talkin about. If I could speak to Dave I'd say, "Dude, you are playing a casino in Minnesota in November! Shake some hands and make some effort to get us fans wantin' to come back". He never even made eye contact... He just did that thing where he blabbed to that imaginary person in the crowd.
Daves voice seems ok thought there were a couple of spots where it broke. He moved pretty good and the kicks are still head height. He wore the exact same clothes as that other casion show so look at those pics.
OVerall, to me the show was good, ok, but nothing special. Maybe it was the crap location or the diseased crowd. I can only compare it to the VH stadium show that to me were pretty fantastic. I know that ain't a popular opinion here but facts are facts. Eddie and the boys are playing stadiums and Dave is playing casinos. I would love a real Dave/VH reunion as much as anyone but we all know that ain't gonna happen.
I'd like to see others comments - rip me to pieces.

                  Specify, specify, specify.

                  Dave went solo 'around' 1985?

Same basic set he's played since going solo? Inaccurate. Might have been more apropo to say same basic set he's been using since he resumed touring in earnest in 1999, although even that doesn't apply since you don't even bother to list what tunes he played.

Has been commented on already, but bears repeating: Van Hagar didn't play stadiums this year. Undermines your credibility.

"When you compare it to the Van Halen tour it is like comparing apples and oranges," but then you go on to say part of the reason the show wasn't as good as Van Hagar's is that Dave didn't slap as many hands as Van Hagar did, which seems comparative to me. When you preface your point with the apples to oranges analogy, this implies that there is no basis for contrast in the first place, which:

                  A) undermines what you then went on to profess later, and
                  B) is inaccurate as comparisons between Roth and Van Hagar
                  are inevitable

I have no doubt that you didn't think the show was all it could or should have been from your experience, and despite your clear Van Hagar bias I'll give you the benefit of the doubt in terms of your machinations, but when you are clearly mistaken on points of verifiable fact (not talking opinions here) and combine that with a general lack of information, your whole premise boils down to you liking the show but not being clear enough in your own mind as to why you couldn't rate it higher than you did without trotting out the typical "sheep" line of reasoning.

                  Doesn't wash here.

I enjoy reading dissenting views here that have some if not all of the elements of a well-thought, reasoned opinion. Suffice to say, your post doesn't fall under the category.

Look forward to you coming back and making another attempt when you're willing to put some effort into it. Remember: just because Eddie and Sammy can't be bothered to try doesn't mean you have to follow suit.
