billy sheehan is definitely NOT the only bass player to tap - besides, i HATE it when he taps on the bass. there's so many other bass players who do it much better...
anyways, EVH says he developed the technique based on Jimmy Page's solo on "Heartbreaker".
Originally posted by Soul Reaper is it true that EVH originally developed the two hand tapping technique to emulate Allan Holdsworth's legato style?
I read that in an Allan Holdsworth album review somewhere
No that is not true.
Edward got the idea of two handed tapping by watching Jimmy Page play the solo of Heartbreaker. In that solo Page does a technique that is called hammer-ons and pull-offs. When doing this technique you fret a note, and then pull off to an open string. Edward thought, "what would happen if you could move the nut," and so he developed a technique where he would fret a note with his right hand, and do the same technique Page does above it. That later developed into the tapping technique that is used today.
sheehan is the best have you looked up any of his tabs or heard his solo album he pisses me off he is so good i listen and then get pissed at how much better he is than me and then i go back to practicing

yes i've heard enough sheehan. have you heard enough of other bass players?
btw..i didnt say sheehan was bad - just said that i don't like it when HE taps on the bass...
and to get back on subject ,i read an interveiw were ed says he got the idea from jimmy page after seeing zep in concert and page was doin hammer ons and pull offs with his fret hand during the heart breaker solo and ed thought to himself what would happen if he used his pick hand to tap another note in there ,the rest is history ...........
