a question about EVH's two hand tapping

is it true that EVH originally developed the two hand tapping technique to emulate Allan Holdsworth's legato style?

I read that in an Allan Holdsworth album review somewhere

billy sheehan is definitely NOT the only bass player to tap - besides, i HATE it when he taps on the bass. there's so many other bass players who do it much better...

anyways, EVH says he developed the technique based on Jimmy Page's solo on "Heartbreaker".

          No that is not true.

Edward got the idea of two handed tapping by watching Jimmy Page play the solo of Heartbreaker. In that solo Page does a technique that is called hammer-ons and pull-offs. When doing this technique you fret a note, and then pull off to an open string. Edward thought, "what would happen if you could move the nut," and so he developed a technique where he would fret a note with his right hand, and do the same technique Page does above it. That later developed into the tapping technique that is used today.
