The point is quite moot indeed. Stylistically however, Eddie is better..
Vai's skill approaches "mutant".....but his style revolves very much around that skill and precision. I believe that if Eddie hadn't become a drunken loser madman then at his best his skills were nearly equal to Vai, and could've gotten better. As I said, the point is quite moot.
Eddie "coulda been a contender".....but he lost it by becoming a loser.
He needed Dave to be at his best.
I like Van Halen more than Dave's PA Rental.....which means I like Van Halen more than you
Ed for sure. Vai is flash and speed. Ed is more technical and is a proven innovator.
"FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKIN' BITCH! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ANYWAYS? TALK TO ME LIKE THAT? FUCK YOU. DRAG QUEEN LOOKIN' WHORE- YOU AINT SHIT. YOUR THE FRECKLE TO THE LEFT OF MY BROWN EYE. NOW GO MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL...OH, PUT DAD ON THE PHONE"
Ed had technical ability in spades, but the guy never let it overwhelm his sense of rhythm and riffs. Least not as far as CVH went. I never got the feeling that the tunes were running second to his solos, or that he wasn't putting the same amount of thought into what was gonna be played underneath the verses and choruses as he was his solos.
Vai, to me....I mean, no doubt the guy is an astounding player. Still would have been even if he hadn't made his contributions to EEAS and Skyscraper. He probably gets tagged as an EVH imitator just as much for being the first guitarist Dave played with after the 1985 split then for what he actually played. And as kick-ass as EEAS was and is, on tunes like Elephant Gun and Big Trouble, it totally sounds, to me, like Vai was putting less effort into the songs vs. the solos.
Vai post-Dave doesn't really compare to EVH, since Vai solo isn't really going for the same type of vibe as Van Hagar was. Wouldn't be astonishing for anyone to say they believe that Vai is technically capable of playing more differing styles of music than Ed is, or play faster, etc.
In the end, Vai's tone just bugged me (sounds way too plastic and overprocessed), as does his conscious effort to come off as a guitar hero. He and Satriani definitely have made an effort to show everyone that they are bitchin' guitarists, whereas Ed just WAS one. I mean, that whole premise of Crossroads, early on in Vai's career, in that Vai was the best guitarist, throughout his tenure with Roth and Whitesnake, where he's continually mugging and making those 'rock guitarist' faces (you know, where his OWN mouth is wide open because what he's playing is so jaw-droppingly good).....Vai just comes off like he wants to be the best rock guitarist ever, and that's not what it's about. That's the vibe he gives off, anyway.
