Subjectively it is a moot point as ones decision is based on opinion. Objectively Vai is on a level where Ed will never be. If Vai wanted to be just a guitar god he would just play extreme riffs, but he doesn't. He has written entire albums on themes and is very musical in the process. Unfortunately Ed stopped evolving after Dave left for the most part which is too bad, he certainly has enough talent he just stopped doing it.

Ed has a recognizable tone and style. Vai is a great guitarist, but just another gunslinger. Never really cared for Vai's guitar sound either. Ed in his prime was unstoppable.

To be honest, a lot of Vai's playing leaves me pretty cold. It seems like all flash and no soul. But I'd still take him over Ed.

Why?

1. Because Vai didn't fuck up CVH.
2. Because Vai may be a guitar-wanker, but Ed is a fucking burned-out failure of a guitar-wanker, and also just an enormous wanker, period.

I caught the G3 tour and Satriani and Vai seem to be full of themselves. I don't like Steve Vai's guitar tone and to be honest I was more entertained by watching Billy Sheehan tear it up on the bass than watching Steve.

The guy that was the funnest to watch was Yngwie Malmsteen. Yeah he's gained some wieght or may I say a lot of wieght but he could fucking play. He did Hendrix so much better than Steve or Satch. I personally thought he kicked their asses and good old Marshalls sound better than Carvin or Peavey signature amps any day of the week.

woah, calm down. EVH basically re-invented the guitar and is seen as a legend and if my knowledge is correct, Vai was in Zappa's band in about early 1980's (that's when he was on his first album with Zappa), so that was after EVH started.

I believe that Vai puts a lot of passion into his music, and yes he does go over the top sometimes with his speed thing, but not many virtuosos in the 80's onwards put in as much passion into their music as Vai (sometimes it can be over obsessive passion, like those 10 hour practise sessions).

In terms of passion and emotion, let's compare someone like Michael Angelo Batio, an 80's virtuoso, to Steve Vai. I think you'll find that although Angelo has lots and lots of speed, has hardly any emotion in his music. Listen to Vai's Passion and Warfare, then compare it to one of Angelo's shred albums, I think you'll get my point.

Come up with your own conclusion, everyone has their own opinion.
