Eddie Van Halen WAS one of the world's greatest guitar players. Hell, he reinvented guitar playing and took it into a whole new direction.

He's a man who had everything and pissed it all away. His career, his talent, his best lead singer who was still willing to work things out, his wife of 23 years. His son will probably avoid him.

Eddie Van Hasbeen is now a drunken bum with nothing. Oh he might have some money stashed away, maybe a lot of it, but that's all he has. Nobody cares about Van Halen anymore.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Ed set the rock guitar world ablaze from 1978 to 1984 (even the most die-hard EdHead would be hard pressed to come up with a case that any aspiring guitarists influenced by Ed ran out and bought Van HAGAR records and tried to learn those licks). He'll always have my respect for what he did on the 6-pack stuff.

Always thought that Ed was capable of better from 1986 onward, and just got lazy from success, hence his style not developing after Hagar joined the band and Ed coasting along, technique-wise. Now I think the guy just shot his creative wad by the time 1984 came along. I mean, it galls me to say this, but that shit Van Hagar came up with last year probably is the best Ed's capable of coming up with now. Think too many years of drinking, combined with the cancer scare, his wife bailing and the ill-will Ed darn well knows so many of us have towards him have just thrown him for a loop. Shit, doubtful many of us wouldn't be suffering to some degree if we had to deal with what he's gone through, self-induced or not.

I guess being disappointed with Ed for not coming up with anything mind-blowing post-1985 is like being pissed at someone because they weren't able to reinvent the wheel twice. His dickhead attitude coming to the surface post-1985 didn't really endear him with many, and I do think he's been wasting himself, particularly over the last 9 years. Think Ed just outlived his usefullness in terms of rock music, but he seems to be the only one unaware of it.

Although I don't think highly of him now, I must admit that EVH was responsible for grabbing the torch from Axe Messiah Jimi Hendrix and propelling guitar playing to the next level.

In his prime when he had the hunger in his belly, the guy was untouchable and inspired a legion of imitators...Same can be said about Roth and the role of frontman.

In fact, as a young child I always thought DLR's name was Van Halen because he's who I associated the band with, not EVH...

All in all though, no better combination of Frontman and Lead Guitarist in the history of Rock.
Without DLR in the lineup, Van Halen is merely Rat Salade...

            Eddie's a faker, his fans are cane-toads

Eddie is a faker who duped, Dave found out, and the trolls who keep wanting to tie up any media at all are hurting rock music real bad.

Rock is so fake, it cannot fight its way out from under the fakers, who duped in the 70s and now cannot supprot the inflated Time Warner stock. Stern keeps accepting this as media, he is bad for the music scene, and maybe he can get his tool caught in this the same way he always gets fined for deletions.

I mean it, talk to ME if you want the guitar part that gets used for all the beats you guys like. Feed the birds? Too squirrely? Aw, then learn to play, since Eddie won't really do that. HE NEEDS SAMMY SQUIRREL to help.:p

Ed's fulla hate. Hate and bitterness will just take it's toll after awhile, that's pretty obvious seeing how he's starting to resemble Festus.

It's destroyed one of the most identifiable tones in Rock guitar history as well.

                Way to go Ed.

EVH ruled the world. Nothing lasts forever.

EVH became EVH because of DLR. DLR became DLR because of EVH.
It was one of those rare and beautiful things. Probably would have never heard of either of them if it wasn't for the other.
Diver Down sounded cool on my way to work today. Most of it anyway.
Not too bad for their worst effort.

Hold any aging rocker under a microscope and it only gets worse as the years pass by folks.
EVH or DLR. Yeah, Daves kept his witts about him better than EVH over the years but they're all gonna be in wheelchairs or 6 feet under before they ever come to terms and do another CVH.

EVH is what he is... He was what he was. He was the best and nobody can take that from him, EVER, regardless of wether or not he and his brother have whinned without ceasing sinse 1985 and everyone's been tired of their act for many moons.
Nobody's ever topped the EVH in his hungry prime, and I seriously doubt anyone ever will.

I haven't been happy with the state of the union for many years, but Hear About It Later still makes me grin. :D

                  Props to EVH
uh, from the day my mamma told me "Boy, you pack your bags".

Calling EVH the best ever is like calling Elvis the best ever...if you speak in terms of influence then they both are the best...

If you speak in terms of over all ability, then neither one is the best...plenty of people play the guitar better and plenty of people sing better...

I give Ed props where props are due - he was a part of my favorite band ever and recorded some great music...he WAS a great guitar player...

HOWEVER...he is not the greatest guitar player ever and sucks as a person, it seems...

Explosive young Eddie Van Halen with David Lee Roth = GOOD

Cantankerous aging Eddie Van Halen without David Lee Roth = BAD

Sorry but the two DLR songs of 96 are great. I love Eddies Guitar work on MWM. CGTSNM is also good, but I like MWM a little bit better.
