    Dave in class...

:D Today I had the last lesson of the schoolyear with one of my classes (15-16 year-old kids). Every time it's the last day, I give my pupils something different and entertaining, just to end in a cool way.

This time, I think I couldn't find anything more entertaining, as I typed the words of "Gigolo" with blanks for them to fill in. First they had to listen to the song (only 3 out of 24 of them had already heard it before), and then listen again and fill in the blanks. A great moment for me. They had their headphones on, their heads swinging and swinging, their faces grinning, regretting to have asked me in the beginning why I hadn't chosen music they like listening to (I had answered that they didn't need me for that purpose). Then they did the "exercise" carefully.
A girl asked me if the singer was black, and I replied he could be with such a voice...
    Then we corrected their sheets.

Then... I played the video!! :D
They dug the humour a lot, but didn't really get the references (C. Lauper, Boy George, B. Idol are unknown to them, for instance).
Evidently, boys stared at the chicks, and girls were amazed by Diamond.

These days, youngsters are imposed bullshit as far as music, movies and books are concerned, but they are not often given the chance to taste the real stuff.
This was my good deed of the day.

5 Stars for being a teacher who actually enlightens as well as educates his students!!

DLR/CVH 101 would be one helluva class and I'd be the first to enroll!!
Without DLR in the lineup, Van Halen is merely Rat Salade...

Cheers buddy! 5 more back for you too.

When I was at school, the only music we got in the end of the schoolyear was... Simon & Garfunkel or the Beatles, you see, sooo original and entertaining...

Oops! I had already given you 5 stars... :D I clicked once more, but I don't think it can work twice.

Errr... hats off to DLRisGOD, he's a damn F.I.N.E. dude and he's got such a coool user name!!!

I'm around the same age as those kids and I appreciate the Diamond One.

It's too bad that most kids nowadays have no appreciation for DLR/VH. Most don't even know who they are!

Cheers, mentalpancake (that's a fine name too ). 95% of my pupils follow television and the radio who play worse and worse bullshit. They lack criticism especially concerning music.
When they heard and saw Dave, it was a real shock, as suddenly their hollow faggot singers or "grothesque" pretenders vanished. The look in their eyes was clear. I don't doubt they all have gone back to their usual bland music, though...

I didn't feel that easy while showing it to them (the director could have walked through the corridor and seen the moment when Diamond is shaking his hips on the censors' desk :D ).

Merci Jano! Very nice of you!

But most of the schoolyear topics and activities are more classic, though I try to deal with very different issues (my subject allows a certain freedom).

Last year, I submitted an interview of Jimi Hendrix to one of my classes (from the Cavett show). First they had to understand the text (I had typed myself), then I showed them the interview, then we had a debate about yesterday's and today's musics, then I showed them 2 extracts of the Woodstock DVD ("Star Spangled Banner" and "Voodoo Chile"). We finally had a talk about that period, the Vietnam War and self-involvement.
I don't like to boast, but they all had good marks at their oral examination. They presented a list that included Jimi's interview, and they all got marks ranging from 14/20 to 17/20.

Most of the time, I use Pink Floyd or the Police, which fit a bit more with nowadays' pupils' ready-made ears...

Criticism concerning music (at least current music) is a hobby of mine. When will these kids ever learn that trends are utter bullshit?
