    Rumored VH Singers

OK, how about this thread, you have.....

Patty Smythe (1985)....Ed and Patty seem to agree she was asked, probably when Ed was lit up

Sass Jordan....Sammy says she was in the studio w/them in 1996

Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple....He says he had the job in 1996 and was waiting on the plane ticket to return to 5150

Joe Lynn Turner....who says Ed was interested, but didn't know JLT was interested in the job until Daniels had "stiffed" Joe and already gotten Cherone in the band.

I actually think the Hughes thing would've been interesting. I'm sure Ed and Al were big Purple fans. Turner would've done a HIGH quality job, but wouldn't have been "magic" in terms of matching his predecessors.

Thought I'd see what you guys think, and if you know of good solid rumors about other auditions....

Joey Ramone was said to be a strong contender in 1996. There were even stories going around that they played a few shows.

Then there's the story of David Cassidy and Danny Bonaduce joining up with the Lying Dutchmen in an old striped school bus as "Van Partridge"

They should just get Dean to be their frontman.

He's already got the scream down.

The Inside: Before Sammy joined the band in 1985, there was a rumor that you guys were considering Eric Martin from Mr. Big. Is this true?
MA: Eric's name had come up, but nothing really happened. We even discussed others like Jimmy Barnes and some people thought Patti Smyth. A lot of this was just kicking around names but we weren't serious about it.

Thanks, Ashstralia. That's what I was looking for!

I remember Steve Rosen harassing Ed about JBarnes the following year, and Ed was polite, saying that he didn't think Jimmy fit the band.

The fact that Eric Martin got his name in the mix is good evidence that those guys were looking at a LOT of people...in 1985, and 1986. Just interesting stuff, if you think in the "what might've happened" context...

I remember Ed talking about Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins...not as a consistent frontman...but for an All-Star Album...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

Mitch Malloy did some songs with VH...in 1996...

and of course the fucking Coverdale rumors...

Yeah, in '85 (the all-star thing). As bad as that would have been (mind you, I like GABRIEL and TOWNSHEND, etc.), at least the band would have not created a fucking legacy with another singer and Dave would probably have been back by '89 or so. ALEX talked him into getting another singer.

My personal favorite was when I started off at the Links...one of the guys there was promoting DAVID HASSELHOFF as getting the job...

so a bunch of us ran with it...

and sure enough...a German Newspaper ran a HUGE article on Hasselhoff joining the band...quoting posts over at the Links...

I heard Billy Squier's name mentioned...but now can't remember if that was a rumored rumor...or real...
