The other thing I'd say, and maybe it ruins this whole web page....

Ed was going where he was going whether it was Sammy there or not. During 1984, he took CONTROL. That's where it was going. For Dave. Or for the poor guy who took on that challenge after him (which turned out to be Sam). Sam didn't change Ed, Ed did. He just wanted to do something different.

It's just that WE didn't want that side of Ed (though, admittedly, I didn't want "Dancing in the Streets" or "In the Midnight Hour" either).

A friend of mine has his ticket stub from Back in Black.....$3.

And another friend saw VH open for Nugent on their first tour.....and he left on the 3rd song into Nugent's set because he was still trying to comprehend what he saw with the opening band.

There's an old issue of the Inside that lists Kansas City as 3/31/78 and 9/17/78.

Eddie for sure, but dammit if Angus isn't one of the best. How about EVH vs. Jimi?
"Honey, my shirt got itself torn up. My shirt tore itself on that stripper's hand, and I need it to be sewed up for the show."
"No problem, Dave, no problem. Say hello to Fluffy."
                  "Fuck you, Fluffy."
"No, no, you're going to upset Fluffy."
"I ain't saying hello to no stuffed bear."
"You know, now that I think about it, it's going to take a little longer to sew up that shirt than I was thinking."
                  "Hi Fluffy, how you been?"
"Now that I'm thinking of it even more, it's going to take half the time, Double D, Diamond Dave! Would you hold Fluffy?"
                  "N--- yeah."

"Sam can never REALLY be in Van Halen because he wasn't at the backyard parties with them in 1976. Brian Johnson can never REALLY be AC/DC's singer because he wasn't fighting Australian rednecks behind the nightclub because he fucked their girlfriends."

Well, we can't really be talking in terms of technique, because Ed just walks all over Angus, live and in the studio. Angus is an important part of the AC/DC sound, obviously agreed. And am not trying to knock Angus or the band for their simplistic approach; those guys have put out some of the most memorable rock tunes ever, IMO. You can definitely say that AC/DC stuck to their guns, and didn't undertake any stylistic shifts that alienated a substantial part of their fanbase (even though the band really said all it had to by 1982 - sure there was the odd single or song here and there that rose to the occasion). By the same token, it was mentioned earlier that Angus has beaten the 5-note pentatonic solo into the ground.....can't say I disagree with that.

Performance-wise, Ed gets the props. Angus was high energy, no doubt. Probably still is. Myself, always thought the schoolboy outfit was kinda lame, as was his epileptic flailing about.

Guess both EVH and Angus provided excellent live representaions of what their respective bands did on record, but Ed just had that much more to represent to begin with. Ed was a stellar player. Angus' main strength was as a part of the band. Just a lopsided comparison from the get-go in terms of the talent involved.
