Most remasters are a joke anyway. They compress the life out of them, boost the highs and lows a bit, and then brag about how it's been remastered from the original tapes, etc. What's the point of going back to the masters if you're going to butcher the sound anyway?

From memory, the DLR Best Of is okay. It sounds a bit harsh when cranked up, but that's pretty common. It has a pretty standard hard rock sound. It's certainly no revelation when you compare it with the original releases, no. They sound fine for what they are.

I already own all of them. They're not too bad. They don't really have any great dynamic range and they're a bit harsh, but they're pretty standard hard rock remasters. The trend in mastering these days is to compress the crap out of whatever's being "remastered." Louder is better, it seems. Evidently the volume knob is now an optional extra on stereos. The VH ones aren't as bad as most, but they could be better. I've gotta get the DCC remaster of the first album. Apparently, it's extremely good. DCC almost released 1984, too. Steve Hoffman even mastered it; they just never got a chance to release it before they closed up shop. A shame, really -- that guy is a fantastic mastering engineer.

I'd dig hearing more natural sounding VH remasters. The current ones are adequate, but when you crank 'em, they sound pretty harsh. What good is VH if it can't be cranked? :D
