Van Hagar sucked Big Time, but why did it sell from 86 to 95?

I think that in general, the listening public doesn't want to be challenged. People have gotten lazy when it comes to listening to music. Today, most people want something quick and easy to digest (although i don't know how ANYBODY can swallow shit like Jo Jo or Hillary Duff). I also bought the first three Spam/VH records when i was growing up because it was current and truthfully - i didn't know any better. Thankfully, my taste has evolved and i won't sit still for sub-par music. True music lovers will go out and find the good shit - it's there to be discovered for anyone, but for some that's just too much trouble.

Does anyone REALLY think that if they hadn't held onto the Van Halen name that it would have been anywhere near as succesful? I don't think "Sammy Hagar Band" would have done so well. And instead of comparing Dave's solo career with Van Hagar, why not try pitting Dave solo and Spam solo head to head. Dave in Vegas or Spam in Cabo. Which would you choose?

Metallica's shit since then has been so bad, it's made me actually dislike their old catalog. Seriously. Considering Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and Justice for All are all the same record, anyway, and with that, they're full of blatant ripoffs from the old school NWOBHM bands that nobody remembered, even then.

i personally think that if some of the songs had dave's vocals and different words they would be good like poundcake might have made a decent song if dave wrote the words and changed the name

Why ask why? You either like both eras of Van Halen, or you don't. Regardless...its a preference.

You can say that people hung on becase of Eddie Van Halen... or because of the name made famous by Dave's assless britches, wild blonde hair, and over the top stage personna... but only one of those is gonna fly.

If fans were looking for Classic Dave-they would have noticed immediately, that things were a little bit different. But times they were a changin... and I think that overall people wanted something different. True Dave followers followed Dave... but I don't think the loyalty issue was as big then, as it is now... nor is it that big of an issue for most people...unless they are a member of the on line network...

And you can argue about the times and whole music scene changing... but even Dave changed his style.

IMO... the biggest wrong about the Van Hagar era is the refusal to change the name of the band. I think they owed that much to David... but at the same time... the fact that they didn't change the name has given Dave a lot of promotion as well. For instance, if they HAD changed the name to something like "Sammy's Good Times Band" or some such shit... how many new listeners would have picked up the old music?

And yes... classic Van Halen does get much more radio play these days.. but I think you also need to consider the amount of time that has passed since it was originally produced.

Say what you want about Metallica now (I think they're shit too), but back in '88, they fucking rocked.

And when Van Hagar played a set that included such gems like "Why Can't this be Love", "Mine All Mine", "When Its Love", and so on while Metallica played "One", "Master of Puppets", "Fade to Black", etc --- its no wonder they blew silly Sammy and the sisters off the stage.

Ha ha! I missed that post. THE SCORPIONS blew VAN HAGAR out of BUFFALO's RICH STADIUM in 88.' So did METALLICA. In fact the only band on the bill I recall being more disappointed in, than the final, was DOKKEN (who were just obviously mailing it in).

I've never been so disappointed in seeing a concert, VAN HAGAR was monumentally underwhelming...

I'm not ashamed to admit that I almost cried that night leaving the concert (early) when I thought back to VAN HALEN'S 84' tour show at the Aud.

You know, it's rather funny...Dokken in '94-'98 (when they were back with Pilson and Lynch) actually turned in tighter performances than they had since 1984...amazing what a lack of drugs in your system can do for your performance on stage, hmm?
