I am only 25, so I didn't get to see the Real VH in the early 80's, but I went to see Van Hagar during the Balance tour.

I was only 16 years old at the time and it was before I grew to hate Van Hagar and Sammy, I guess you could say I was young and stupid.

Someday I hope to see the Real Van Halen.

At this rate, the only way we'll see the REAL Van Halen is on DVD.

Yeah that's because I wanted to hear for myself what it was like. I tried to "get it" like Eddie said. Then I realized there was nothing to get, it was one of the worst albums ever.

Yeah put it in your sig and take things out of context asshole, yeah you're a big man. And why would you put something I say in your sig, you're that obsessed with me?

Here's one thing that's not out of context: You've seen Van Hagar multiple times and will see them again if they come near you. THAT is lame.

If by that you mean an official release, the only way that will ever happen is if Eddie runs out of beer money.....A DVD of the Largo show would be a great place to start.....

Oh that one hurt Lou.... :D

I have yet to see one person that has seen VH live in concert with Roth, and PREFERS Van Hagar....

And the reason for that ?? IMO the simple fact of the matter is that there was/is/never will be a comparison of the raw energy of a Roth-led Van Halen concert....

The '84 show I saw in San Diego was BY FAR the most incredible concert I have seen in 25 years of concert-going.....

There's already a DVD of Largo and it more than suffices for me. What we need is a DVD of Oakland '81 because I don't think anyone has that other than people involved with the band.

Back to this issue of whether I'm allowed to comment on music, I've seen Roth solo twice, that's the best I can do given the circumstances. I've seen Van HALEN concerts through the TV, meaning most if not all of the bootleg DVD's circulating. One of them (Rio '83) also has a Gayry show on there (Nuremburg '98) so I got treated to that laugh fest, boy am I glad I didn't pay for that.

The thing is though, even if you weren't privileged to see Van HALEN live, how do you listen to Roth era CD's and Hagar era CD's and think that Hagar is equal or even better? One is fine wine and the other is Ernest Gallo. The Gallo comes with some cheese as well.

I suppose if you're not interested in challenging music then you'll prefer Van Hagar, because it does the work for you. Simple chords, simple melodies, simple lyrics. Only thing that gives it anything to hang it's hat on is Eddie. Whereas the hardest VH albums WACF and Fair Warning are not simple music, and it wasn't all Ed either, it was also Roth's lyrical/musical genius. In fact I remember hating WACF for the longest time, and then in 2000-2001 it just hit me, I finally got it. That's also when I got Roth and I got what classic Van Halen was about and how anything after that was a bastardization.

Van HALEN's music is classic in that it overcomes generation differences, just like the music of Mozart, Bach and Brahms. Someone said it earlier, you don't have to be born in the 1700's to appreciate that music. Well I don't have to be in my 30's to appreciate Van HALEN and get what it's about because it's just that good. The same cannot be said for Van Hagar; if you didn't grow up with Van Hagar you won't like it because it's not "good enough" to overcome generation differences. Proof of that is the fact that very little Van Hagar is on the radio whereas Van HALEN is on there constantly.

Face it Sammy fans, your man and your band has been forgotten. Eddie Van Halen, because of his work in Van HALEN (not Van Hagar) is the only reason why Sam is temporarily in the spotlight again, but mark my words, as soon as this little sham dissolves, people will go back to not giving a shit about Van Hagar music again because Van Hagar 1986-1996 does not register on the rock and roll timeline.
