I can understand a lot of the animosity/dislike towards Asia, though, really...most people think of Asia and think of "Heat of the Moment", maybe "Only Time Will Tell"...which goes without saying...
Back in the day, it was big, but now it's early 80's crap and I understand that...myself, I was big with ELP and Yes back in the day, so of course I picked it up...loved it...got into U.K. (Wetton) shortly thereafter...all that prog rock was, well, music to my ears...
I followed them when they replaced Wetton with Payne...loved "Aqua", thought it was brilliant...still do..."Aria" and "Arena" were great, as were the "Archiva" sessions that eventually got released...I kinda slipped off after that, so if Payne hasn't been involved since then, I've been unaware of it.
Geoff Downes has always been the biggest selling point to me though, as I learned piano first prior to teaching myself bass, so I have a love of any sort of progressively driven keyboard rock...this doesn't include Van Hagar, though, let's make that distinction right now...whereas Asia (at least, in later years...say post '91/'92) became more of a real band to me and not just the supergroup thing, Van Hagar/Eddie's keyboards was the dumbing down of the band, not an improvement - Asia always sold the keyboards, so there wasn't any selling out to my ears...it was what it was, you liked it or didn't...
Asia is absolutely known for 1982; nothing will ever change that and everybody will remember them FOR that, and that's OK...every successive album since their contract with Geffen tanked in '90 has been released on a different (and more increasingly independent) label...no radio time...no videos...no promotion...I absolutely understand why people have the impression of them that they do...
But I firmly LOVE the musicianship...songwriting...excellent stuff and sadly missed by most...Asia should have been much bigger than what it was...but that's me...when people think "Heat of the Moment", I think "Military Man", "The Hunter"..."Who Will Stop the Rain"..."Two Sides of the Moon"..."Different Worlds"...etc.
ALL of us have a musical side that somebody will consider "gay"...no biggie...
