Classic Van Halen was Denied the right to be In High School.

Originally, Todd Rundgren was to star as the musical act, but both sides could not come to an agreement. Next, Cheap Trick was contacted, but a similar situation happened. Next, talks were conducted with Warner Bros. Records, where Allan Arkush had a connection, to decide on which band they should use in the film. The first suggestion was Devo, but Arkush decided that they had too much of their own concept. Another band considered for the movie was Van Halen, but Warner execs warned Arkush that they were raucous and would be difficult to handle. Finally, an exec name-dropped the Ramones, who recorded for Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records. Arkush, being a huge fan of the band, agreed, and the rest is history. To this day, Rundgren regrets passing up the role he was offered.

LMMFAO, I always thought when listening to VHI, VHII, W.A.C.F. and Fair Warning Van Halen sounded more punk than metal.

Tell that to Henry Rollins. He said the first time he heard Van HALEN's debut album he thought it made Johnny Rotten sound like a hairdresser.

And a lot of punk rockers on the West Coast listened to, even skated to VH. Can't say that about any other rock bands of the era.

It's probably more in terms of attitude than the actual sound, of course. But true punk rock was always about attitude anyway.

I would say the same about the Bon Scott era of Ac/Dc.

Which goes to prove how fucking useless these media created labels to categorize music really are.

As I just said in another post, Punk was all about attitude and both Van HALEN and Ac/Dc had a lot of that.

And between the two of them, created 12 of the greatest albums ever made. Call it punk, call it metal, whatever. Fuck that, I just call it GRATE.

And that's what counts. Either music is worth listening to, or it isn't. And no label is going to make up for that.

            Right fucking on.

A Van Hagar fan would not understand the comparison .

              Nailed.

Rollins also mentioned when the band (Black Flag) wanted to listen to something heavy, they'd put on a Van Halen record...and it (the record) weighed a ton. Make no mistake, Greg Ginn OWNED that band (Black Flag), and has expressed similair sentiments.

Van Halen didn't sound like Punk Rock.

It didn't sound like Heavy Metal.

Maybe that's what resonated with the counter-culture? I could give a fuck less.

One thing's for sure, it's still resonating.

Easy there rus, you're quoting Van HAGAR there with that last quote.

Van Halen was just straight up rock and roll.

I don't care who you are or what you skate to.

That never goes out of style.

Ya know...they were one of the heaviest bands to make it in the U.S. in the late 70s....

Not necessarily "metal", but their intensity was unequaled....

Not to get back on topic or anything, but I'm trying to imagine Van HALEN in this movie. The film's always been one of my favorites as it is. Mostly because of the Ramones' performances. Certainly NOT due to stellar acting

Defintly Secound that, In Fact back in the late 70's AC/DC's Attitude auctually got them labled Punk by the british press, Which helped them stay alive while other bands were beginning to fade. Attitude is what is auctually missing in Rock today!
