Real reason behind 2004 tour

For some reason, this thought just came to me the other day about the 2004 tour. The reason Ed squeezed so many shows into 1 summer, overcharged for tickets, and toured even though he & Sammy had to be seperated for at least the 2nd half of the tour.

This was the first tour in decades that Eddie got to keep 100% of his share. He was now officially seperated from Valerie. That means she can't get half. Even though they weren't divorced yet, once that seperation is legal, everything earned after does not get split.

Almost all of the money Eddie made in his career he had to split with her 50/50. I never saw anything about any settlements, but I'm sure she got half, and a sizable alimony & child support payment plan.

I think the real reason for the tour, was to remind any of us who forgot, how pathetic a Sammy fronted VH actually was.....

I personally think that Ed knows that he couldn't keep up with Dave and that is why they didn't/won't tour. I don't mean intimidation but maybe Ed couldn't handle being 'second banana' to Dave's obvious charisma. Sam was a safe choice, albeit the wrong choice.

I don't think Dave would have done that tour anyways. He wouldn't tour just for money, which that tour was about. Dave wants to do it for the magic. The money is just a nice addition.

If the tour was all about money then it was an even bigger failure, since it didn't make much.

Think the reason Ed went with Sammy is it was the path of least resistance.

Far as what Ed made, I heard the band got a guaranteed fee for each show, so they made the same if the halls sold out or not (have heard anywhere from $300 to $750k per show).

It's fairly obvious that for all the moaning about Dave's ego over the years that Ed has one of his own, and Roth would have gotten just as much attention as Ed if they had gotten back together. Probably more, in terms of the media, because Roth is far more quotable and gives better interviews.

Finally, I'm sure Hagar settled for less than what Ed and Al got for those shows, whereas Dave would insist the proceeds got split evenly...

The 2004 tour smacked of a cash-grab. It wasn't like it was the beginning of a new period of activity for EVH, because the guy has gone running back into his hole since the tour ended. Something was attempted to be put together with Roth a couple of times since Cherone left, and when that fell apart they hooked up with Sammy (who probably got all the info on the failure for things to work out with Dave from Mikey, and knew just when to call Alex...funny how he didn't call Eddie...and start things rolling for a tour).

I remember a Roth quote about his time in VH about all the media interviews he would do. Something along the lines of "It's not that I do that much, but that Eddie does so gaddamn little"
