Roth Review from Billboard Radio Monitor

Not a good review. But thought I would put it up here for discussion.

"David Lee Roth: Even More 'Bland And Painful'
    April 04, 2006
    By Paul Heine

The train wreck known as Roth Radio sank to a new low Tuesday (April 4) when David Lee Roth, in an act of defiance, resorted to reading the comics on the air.

Reeling from an apparent management directive to read and comment on the news, the embattled talk show host wannabee was audibly taken off his mark by a listener phone call. Your show is garbage, bring back J.V. & Elvis, the caller said, referring to the WFNY (Free FM) New York midday team who subbed two days last week for Roth after he went AWOL during what was supposed to be a week’s worth of broadcasts from Miami’s tony South Beach.

Admitting his show sucked, Roth blamed local and corporate management, accusing them of neutering his program by firing much of his on-air support team, taking away his cherished music beds and restricting the topics he can talk about.

Making numerous derogatory comments about CBS Radio CEO Joel Hollander, Roth said he believes management intends to make his show so “bland and painful” that he will quit and the company will not have to pay him.

Roth did read the news--apparently without bothering to pre-read the stories, before making an impromptu decision to read the funnies instead.

Based at WFNY, Roth replaced Howard Stern on January 3 on CBS Radio stations in Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and West Palm Beach. "
“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”

    April 3 2006

Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth and comedian Adam Corolla have both flopped as replacements for DJ superstar Howard Stern.

In his first radio survey, Roth lost 75% of Stern’s audience. Corolla rated a measly 0.7%.

With the departure of Stern, CBS radio took the unusual step of dividing the Stern audience by giving the East Coast Roth for breakfast and the West Coast Adam Corolla.

CBS programmers are struggling to save the shows. Roth has been ordered to make changes to his show. Most of his support crew has already been fired.

Considering Corolla’s comedic background with shows like The Man Show, his talk show is just not funny, lacks substance and borders on pure waffle."

Starting to sound like Dave should maybe bail on the whole thing. Why stick around if he's not going to enjoy it? Won't serve him or his listeners well, although CBS isn't acting any better by trying to stifle him...

I mean, I assume they wanted Dave because they knew who he was and wanted that type of personality for the show. What's so hard about letting him do what he wants, and having a show that's a little different? Why bother getting Roth if they just wanted the same old morning show format?

Starting to come across like CBS is thinking they made a mistake when the show didn't take off like a rocket out of the starting gate, and rather than fire Roth and have to pay him off, they're just gonna make doing the show such a shitty experience for him that he'll quit and they can keep the money.

      Fucking suits.
      Scramby eggs and bacon.

The problem is that the management tools want xerox copies of Stern, and they want instant ratings.

If I wanted to hear Stern again, I would have bought a pay radio. Nothing wrong with change. And nobody is going to get instant ratings. Not even the horribly awful bonesmuggling cookie-cutter Stern rip-offs known as "JV and Elvis."

Corporate stooges have no imagination, no vision - I know from experience. It's a Dilbert world, and it's run by pointy-haired bosses.

If he had a good attorney, he could have his cake and eat it, too. He has the upper hand in this situation, but he doesn't seem to have anybody explaining that to him.

I don't know why, but it always seems like people in entertainment all have low-rent attorneys, regardless who they are. Maybe it's because there is never huge money at stake.

I imagine he's aware of that...

I have no clue why it seems that every fucking review, when it comes to Dave,is always negative. Are they even listenining? I know the show is NO Howard Stern, but wasn't that supposed to be the point? Who the fuck would want to listen to an wanna be version of the real thing? It's like REAL CLASSIC VH fans having to deal with Sammy taking over. It's not REAL. Dave has been doing the best he can with what he's been given. God gives you lemons...make lemonade...you guys know the deal. It just goes to show you how pathetic the radio...music...and movie industry has become. Unless you have over 258 million listeners you're considered crap. Please. Look at fucking NSYNC...they sold millions of records...you dont see my ass running out to the nearest BEST BUY and picking up any of their fucking CD's. Even if Dave loses the show....I still feel he did a great job. JV and Elvis really arent that great eiether...sorry. Critics love having a field day with Dave and I've had it. If any of these so called "critics" did their homework they would see what a talented..intresting man DLR truly is. I know I'm wasting my breath but I'm a fan. BUT...if I thought dave truly sucked....I'd say it. Let's just hope that this little radio gig turns into something that will lead him in the right direction. Everything happens for a reason. Fuck the critics....use your own brains Army. Dave aint dead yet. Thanks for letting me vent...
              I need a drink....
