Dave a rockstar or musician?

In Daves book he mentions that he smoked dope before laying down tracks on the VH albums. He also has been drunk and stoned on stage while palying these songs now for 30 years.

My question is this. Since its obvious to everyone that Dave never seems to remember the lyrics HE wrote to all or any of his songs live and on stage, is it possible he was straight and clean in the studio?

Go back 30 years to the oldest boots in the clubs, watch ANY Dave dvd boot, or US fest and you'll see dave repeat lines over and over, mis cues and tons of fuck ups. Well hey thats Dave right? But what about when he recorded VH 2 or FW...? He must of been sober for those...

Not that it matters, I just figured it was high time we ask what needed to be asked: Is this why VH and Dave split? You watch a Spammy Halen concert and Spam knows the words. (not hard to sing the word love over and over again though) And Cherones short stay was talented, albeit very gay... Is this what pissed the VH bros off the most? The fact Dave couldnt bother to remember his cues or lyrics?

you go back and listen to the earliest boot of Dave singing with VH and you'll hear fuck up after fuck up. (not complaining though, to me, thats what made the band) But then listen to the last 1984 tour with dave and you'll still hear dave forgetting cues and lyrics.

Dave the entertainer didnt need to know the lyrics, he just ham'd his way thru it all and that, no doubt pissed off the other 3 members, who had to at least play instruments to keep the music going. Its not like Al could go "ah shit, I missed that part, sorry hehehehehe"...Or Ed skipping a solo on the 79 tour... Mike forgot to get his bass tuned... But when it came to dave, all bets were off.

I can see Roth forgetting lyrics as a piss off, regardless if it was real or not (which I doubt it was, because he seemed to ALWAYS forget them in the same spot.)

In that early years DVD, Anthony says Roth would always try and talk/act to him onstage like he was a prop/part of the show, instead of "including" him as part of the band or whatever.

At any rate, Dave is out, and it wasn't the biggest mistake of his life. He doesn't sing sappy ballands, and the rest of the band wanted to, but on the flip-side, they didn't want to sing whatever the "Chemical Brothers" thing was about.

Also for the record, dave to me CAN sing when he wants to, or when it calls for it. There are countless songs from the classic VH setlist that lyrically and vocally blow my mind. But it seemed to me growing up and watching them, Dave was the Ringmaster, and VH were the "circus act" that wanted to be taken more seriously. They got their wish. They got sappy Sam. Well, I prefered the "Circus" better. But my main question is still "Did Dave smoke weed, or do blow while cutting the album?" and if so, "How is it that they can have Diver Down out in a few weeks, but it takes Dave the same time to get the words right to The Full Bug live?" Is it an act? Does he care to remember? Could he sing Me Wise Magic live? Could he recite Light Up the Sky? Dave needs to do some homework, dig out some old classics and throw in the 2 newer ones from 96 and change up his setlist. Let me guess, he still opens his show with HFT? Closes with Jump?

C'mon Dave, give me a break.

I want something new and something that means something to rock and roll. Even in a small dose like DLR Band... Gimme!

and Mikey was/is a prop. He was a prop back in the day when he wore his little cape and did circles on the stage on his back and he's Sammy's prop now, for selling more tix for his show.

Id like to see Dave and Ed make peace and make music. Just a studio album or two. No Mikey. No hidden agendas. Leave the past behind ya for the sake of good r n r.

Dave never forgot any of the lyrics. Probably something to do with emulating Al Jolson's old schtick. "Mammy" was extremely popular with a live audience....so popular, in fact, that Jolson would pretend to forget the far less complicated lyrics to liven the act up, and garner even MORE crowd heat.

On a side note, I bet roy wanted to forget 'em!!

So, was roy's changing of the lyrics the lowest of the low? IMO, it's a moot point. Changing the lyrics to songs that changed the face of the hard rock genre? Unforgiveable.
